Anyone had good luck trying to renew the color on the interior of a 71-74 javelin? The plastic is polypropyline and is sort of waxy. Anyone had any luck with dyes or plastic paints and them stay on and not scratch too easily?

I'd go with this company for plastic coating products.
Just stick with their product as not to save a buck in prep and you shouldn't have any troubles. http://www.sem.ws/ |

Hi: I have used SEM aerosol spray on dyes with great results. The key to these in my opinion is to clean the object's surface very well so that there is no residual silicone, wax or oils on the object.
SEM does make a surface prep wash soap that I use. First I use a strong solution of DOVE soap which is a wonderful de-greaser. Then the SEM soap. Then I do masking or taping if needed.
Then I have found that many light coats of SEM is best. Do allow sufficient time between coats for the paint/dye to dry. I have been doing no more than one coat per day.
You can also spray some SEM into a paint can cover cap and use a brush to paint by hand on some problematic areas. You can also dab it on with a sponge and mix colors or hues (I have found that helpful with the AMC's various TAN colors).
I have NOT done seats but did do arm rests, dash parts and pads, mirror bodies and interior trim pieces.
I hope this helps you out?

I have also used SEM vinyl dye. I had the colour custom mixed using a still decent interior piece as a sample. It worked well to stabilize the sail panels which were sun damaged and chalking. As 12gauge already said, you can't clean the parts too much. They must be clean clean clean. I "painted" most of the dash parts, A pillar trim, sail panels and even the package tray. It all came out great and sticks well.
Vinyl dye is actually the incorrect product to use on the hard plastic parts. For an authentic factory finish, use lacquer paint. Since my car is not concours, I don't care. |
