this is probably going to be an odd sounding one. i have a 73 javelin that had a full vinyl roof on it. the metal underneath is decimated. i have a good roof of of the 71 that i cut up but it had the t-top style vinyl roof. my question. how hard is it to skin both of the roofs and swap them? and two how weird do you think it will look to turn one of the t-top style roofs into a hard top? with no vinyl.

i'm on a really low budget. and i'm tired of the car sitting still wasting away. so i'm going to start slapping what i have on hand together. so unfortunately don't have the money to find someone with a flat, good roof. unless someone wants to donate to the cause. i just need to know what you would think is the best way to swap them out and make it look good.

will it just look to stupid with the t-top style roof? should i just sand it down to good metal and bondo/fiberglass the roof smooth?? is there some other low cost option that i'm missing out there??? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Ask scene one, via pm. He skinned a Javelin, from skeleton to a real beauty. I'll search for his build... called 3rd time's a charm.

A 71 top won't look odd, only of done wrong. I actually like the 71 - 72 top, myself.

Ive only seen one reroof on a Javelin. It was done pretty well and basically chopped at the top of the a pillars about a quarter way down the quarters and welded back together.

Wooster Kevin is doing one now on his for the same reason. Maybe he'll post some pics so you can see what's involved. I've thought about doing a swap with the 71-72 roof when I repaint mine because I think they look nicer.

The car would look great with the T style roof,. The main structure underneath appears to be the same with either the T style or the flat style.

To me a T-top was just a good way to weaken a chassis.
Nothing but added problems and leaks.

I believe the OP is not wanting a Hurst Style T-Top, cut giant holes in roof......but rather just reskin the roof with a 71-72 Javelin Roof that has the T-Top "LOOK" on a 73 Flat Roof car.....

Hurst did have make T-Top kits in 1973 +/- for FULL FRAME GM cars....a friend of mine had one, new in the box and if I remember correctly, the instructions did say, NOT to be used on Uni-Body car.

The Javelin didn't have the removable T tops, the roof skin was just shaped in that style so there are no chassis issues worth the T style roof skin.

Yes, I am not wanting to add ta tops to my javelin. Although I always liked the look. U do know about their problems. Like said above I have a flat roofed 73 where the metal is swiss cheese. And what is left of a good 71 ta top fake out look roof. And was wanting to know of any concerns about swapping the skins of the two roofs.. I wanted to make sure there wasn't a structural difference between the two. Consensus seems to say no.

On another odd note. I'm not planning to put any vinyl back on the car. And I'm going to be deleting most of the trim. So any ideas on how to do the roof so it won't look goofy? I was going to go silver on the car with a black t- stripe. Think if a paint the areas where the vinyl was black That it would look OK? Or just leave the whole roof the body color?
