If there is anything I should be aware of this particular dizzy; please either post here or PM me. |

Just do check, and I would say this about ANY replacement, US, Chinese, Canadian, whatever - make sure that flat bit is flat high enough on the shaft. If not, the round part of the shaft will hit the oil pump shaft and push on it. I had to grind a bit more of mine flat to fit well. It bottomed before the dist was snug in the block.
You want to be able to move the shaft up and down a few thou with it installed. PLEASE do report back on how it goes! We'd like to know how the fit is, any issues, etc. Hoping it's a drop-in and just plain works for ya. You'll like HEI in there. Edited by billd - Apr/09/2008 at 10:52pm |

Before you button it up, check for fit without the gasket first and be sure it seats all the way down to the block. At least it'll give you the gasket thickness as a buffer.

Will probably be more effective if you put it in the engine instead.........

Because the shaft size is different. The 6cyl gear won't fit the Chebby dist shaft.
HOWEVER, the gear off a LATE AMC V8 (I think 83 or later....number 3208615 ) will not only fit the chebby dist, but mesh perfectly with the AMC 6 cam. However, that AMC gear is a bit taller so you may need to grind it down a bit. (the plain end, not the cut gear end)
There are some articles on the web telling which gears work, and also advising that new gears can be bought from some 4x4 stores because it's a common upgrade.
The Chevy 250, used in Chevy and GM trucks and the Nova works well.
The distributor was used from '76-'82, but some early vehicles came with a different distributor with a remote coil. I got the one with the remote coil, NO big deal, simply mount the coil on the engine or fender area, or buy a new cap and coil and convert.
You can find those distributors for little change in the yards and in my case, I didn't even bother replacing any parts, just put on the AMC V8 gear, ground more of the shaft flat as it hit the oil pump too soon, and simply connected my tach lead and an ignition 12v source. (NO resistor wire or ballast)

Distributor is in the car and; thus far, no problems
As per poormansMACHINE's advice; I dropped the sparker in sans gasket and it seem to fit perfectly. Pulled it back out, installed the gasket, then cinched the distributor down after verifying the rotor pointed to #1 cylinder. And; yes, the dist shaft moves up and down about 1/16"
I used a ca. 1987 Chevy 4.3L V6 ignition wire set due to two of the leads having 90 degree bends to clear the cap (damn, that distributor is huge), and extended the power lead that fed the now defunct BW 35 kickdown switch to the 'Batt' terminal. Hit the key; car started right up.......set the timing by ear. Verified with a timing light-----I was guessing that I was @ 4 BTDC, sure enough. The car is definitely more responsive but, the carburetor needs some help. |

That's why I said leave off the gasket. It should hit the bottom easy and there shouldn't be any gap where the housing would clamp down. Some 6 banger owners ran into a problem like this after installing HV oil pumps. The top of the drive gear wasn't radiused the same and pushed the distributor up. Shortly after, the pump bound and snapped off the tangs on the gear. |
