As most of you know; I swapped in a ca. 1972 six (232) and TorqueCommand into my 1967 American SW.
Car runs and drives but, I now want to pitch the points and go with a factory electronic setup.
For the record: I already have the '1972' Hornet starter solenoid installed, do I simply tap off the two small side-by-side terminals for the Start/Run feeds to the ECU (after disconnecting the OEM power feed to the coil)? Edited by 1967AmericanSW - Apr/06/2008 at 6:54pm |

I'd replace the points and condenser with a Petronix Electronic Ignition unit. It costs about $65 to $75 and takes about 15 minutes to install. Doesn't get any easier than that. On my 232, I had the problematic Prestolite distributor and went with an HEI from CRT Performance.

I'd also avoid the prestolite system.
Go with crane, pertronix, whatever.
I've had such bad luck also with Ford systems over the decades, my 82 Eagle now has HEI from a 6cyl Chevy. All it takes is a later AMC V8 gear. You can also get gears from 4x4 stores as it's a common conversion used on Jeeps.

Yeah I found out that a V-6 Chevy Distributor would work after I bought my HEI unit but at least it's all new.

Be careful with a V6 distributor! Chevy made even, semi-even, and odd fire V6's and only the even fire one will work. The other engines don't fire at 120 degree intervals.

Which GM Six application did you use?
I am guessing a 1975-84 250.

I see that someone in eBay is offering a 'Dragonfire' distributor conversion for the AMC 232-256 Six------it is an HEI style setup.
Any thoughts good, bad, or? The price is reasonable

It was an I6 from a Chevy pickup. Probably a 250.
It's got the coil separate from the cap, which is fine. I can always convert later if I wish, using a new cap and coil. I mounted the coil on the fender. It was mounted on the engine in the truck I got it from. Junkyard find, so didn't really pay attention to the year/size, but pretty sure mid-80's, most likely 250 or so. |

I went ahead and ordered up a 'Dragonfire' HEI off of eBay. I will need ignition wires as well, but they are inexpensive. :)

Before you cinch that thing into the hole, be REALLY sure that it's going to fit into the oil pump properly. Some distributors I've seen don't have enough machined off the sides of the shaft, and the oil pump shaft bottoms out on the dist shaft, applying pressure to the pump and the thrust washers on the dist. It should fit so that you can actually move the shaft up and down a bit when fully installed -should be some end-play.
