I guess this is where this would go? But does anyone have a good cheap set of plans for a motor run stand? I know metal would be the optimal material to make one out of. But would something like wood be able to be used? And if so how thick would it need to be? I want to make one to start testing the engines before I get them on the cars but I really have no idea where to begin.

I used an engine cradle from a Rebel I parted out years ago. Mounted that on some square tubing I had lying around. Used a spare bell housing since the starter bolts to it.

A friend of mine has my run stand right now, got his Machine's 390 on it.

I was stupid lucky in the case of my 285 build since I already had the vehicle sitting mostly apart and was able to simply drop out the crossmember and mount that to the finished engine on a nice flat plank where it can't run away. Confused

The stand in the link is the one I am using with some custom mods. I think I have 4-450 in it all day but it can run an engine out of the box.

Run stand made out of an old motor stand and a few pieces of angle iron.

I work on more than AMC.  So I've been planning on a stand based on sliding door track.  My thought is that the rear mount would be stationary bolted to a bell housing.  The sides would be door track so the front mount could be adjusted fore and aft.  The front mount crossbar would also be door track.  This way the pedestals for the front mount could then be adjusted side to side for any engine you'd have.  I have some salvage track so for me there isn't any cost for the framework other than some casters.  The track I'm speaking of looks like this.

Here is mine, only on cart because I got this all Aluminum 4 wheel cart for $20.00, bu the actual cradle is exactly what "Rebel Machine" above shows in his picture, just on top so I don't have to bend over so far to run it.  The electrics are just left over parts from parting cars out.  If you use a 3 speed or 4 speed bell housing, then you can run a engine with flywheel or flexplate.  I have old Y pipe off single exhaust 69 Javelin for exhaust, so I can swap from rectangular to dog leg head engines in a snap.  Ingition switch is from a riding lawn mower at junk yard. The engine mounts I cut off the studs that hold the engine in the crossmember.....since you are not trying to extract torque from the engine it will stay in place no problem, it doesn't need to be bolted in....I do have a couple of bolts in transmission end of bell housing to keep the engine supported.

For you Vet's, that worked the flight line, it was an old Military Herman Nelson Aircraft Engine Preheater, I just gutted the top heater parts off (ALL Aluminum) and used the base.  I actually got near the $20.00 out of the scrap I took off........it had hub caps too, but they were missing!  It has storage compartments underneath for the giant flex hose that was used with it, which now houses all the manifolds and parts I use just for running engines......otherwise to much gets mis-placed...just look around the backround, what a mess!   I hate it, soon to be cleaned up with the departure of current project back to owner.
