Here is some of the pictures from the instructable.
I was working in a metallurgical lab in SC, and was tired of holding onto these tiny metal samples while polishing them on a very powerful polisher (lost fingernails/fingerprints). I designed this sample holder that fits the 1/2" x 3/4" samples for polishing. This turned out great and saved my fingers! The only slight issue was that I only had the acrylic tapped down, so when it was on one of the last passes, it moved slightly and you can see the ridge on the bottom of the part. |

You can do things the right way or the wrong way.
Or you can do it MY way...which is like the wrong way, only faster. |

Could you use a drill press with your table in order to do metal?

A drill press is designed to go up and down and the spindle bearing doesn't have the lateral support required for milling. You might get away with it for a while, but the chuck would eventually start to wander.

A metal heavy duty router seems more viable than a plastic dremel tool..and BTW it's under $200.00 not including the $175.00 software. Would love to make one though but spending 400.00 or so on a science project right now is not in the cards. Hopefully someones make a robust version

Just a simple printer (parallel) cable.
And there are quite a few free software choices out there. Of course some of them are limited to the number of lines it will run. |

This would be great for making many plastic or nylon small parts. If it will cut plexiglss as is it should be okay for soft aluminum. A new end for the old Rambler steering columns immediately comes to mind!
For plastic and maybe soft wood (pine, not oak!) a drill press will probably work fine. I do like the idea of a flip-up table for a router though. Might be a bit hard to set the depth control up, but should be doable. I would think a router would need a lot more support. I've got a plunge router on springs (pushes against springs to set depth). Leave the locks loose and make a cam to push it down might work.... Edited by farna - Jan/13/2013 at 12:31pm |
