I think the distributor lock function is very good feature.
Just don't lose your phone while out with your car.
I wonder if you know the distributor module PIN you could unlock the module from another phone?

not quite.
all you're doing is a timing change.
On a diesel you can easily pull over 100 horse by altering fuel and timing alone.
how much can you get from a magic distributor on a gas engine?

Some Chevy guy will hack your mobile phone and increase your base timing to 30 deg. BTDC

"And there are YouTube videos on the Progression Distributor providing good spark to 8000 rpm's!
Where others the spark craps out at under 5,000 rpm iirc...  eh.... just marketing maybe..."

The big cap HEI and Ford big cap Duraspark conversion are supposedly good for 8,000 rpm as well. Just about anything else (especially most mechanical distributors) will start to lose performance much over 5,000 rpm due to points bounce and spark jump. THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS!!

The whole "use your smart phone" thing is really just a convenience. They use a cheap Bluetooth module to communicate with the processor in the distributor so you can easily change the timing curve. If you need to adjust the distributor parameters it's a good idea. You can change the timing curve until it's perfectly suited your engine/fuel/environment as needed. A tablet could be used as easily as a phone. Using Bluetooth you don't have to connect a cord when you want to make a change. No weights, springs, or screws to tinker with.

That said, if you have something like the FiTech already and there is an ignition option, that's the way to go. Will integrate perfectly with your fuel delivery system. Kind of hard to see using the electronically adjustable distributor with a carb, but if you need to recurve the dizzy for best performance why not?

Not just points bounce or (even)spark jump. It’s the limitations in achieving proper dwell time, reasonable coil duty cycle, and on. Especially with an 8 cyl.

But seriously...wouldn't it be easy to be hacked by some goofball?
Even maybe by accident?

Four pages of comments and the answer is simple:

If you don't want to play with timing on you're phone, don't get this distributor. If technology is your friend, then this might be something to look at.
