I have the Crane unit in my 70 Javelin. It works very well. It's a very simple install, and it comes with a built in adjustable rev limiter.
Cool

Does it work well with factory tach?
I think XJ said it did - seems either he or his son have one.

i bought a mallory hei replacment direct hook up dizzy and i was driving today and runing alot of rpm idk how many bc the tach dosnt work with it but it started to pop and backfire i blew the ignition module on it it was an o.e. module so it only handles 6000 rpm and i must have gone over that but my fix is an msd module that has builting rev limiter and tach drive. for 80 bucks

It's usually the other way around.
Popping and backfiring won't blow a module and neither will too many rpm.
Something was killing the module causing the pop and backfire.

I have the Crane unit in my 70 AMX and the factory tach does work with it. Have had it now for 4 years with no problems, starts much better than with points.  About the only down-side to the Crane unit is that you need to run a ballast resistor to drop the voltage to the unit. If you don't you'll burn it out. Would've been so much nicer if they'd have used 12v components in the design. We had a Mallory unit in the kid's J-10, and didn't like it at all. Had to modify the advance cam shaft to mount the trigger wheel which meant pulling the dist. Has three LARGE wires, so no way it looks stock, and also burned one out from voltage spikes. I haven't seen the Pertronix unit, but many like 'em......
