Well,
Call it inevitable but while replacing the distributor cap, some of the wires popped back off....is there a good diagram out there showing where the wires go, and for that matter just where the cap should set back in over the rotor? Thanks. |

Best thing to do is to put the engine at top dead center for cylinder #1. That is the front one on the driver's side. The cap only goes on one way, it has a tab that lines it up. If you put the timing mark on the balancer on that mark then you are either correct or 180 degrees out. Check the rotor and see what terminal it is pointed at. It will be either pointed at the #1 cylinder spark plug terminal or 180 degrees out. If it is 180 out, then rotate the motor again until the timing marks line up on the balancer again and it is pointed at the #1 terminal.
If you still have some wires on, do this. The firing order is 18436572 and it rotates clockwise. Simply find any one wire, identify it's plug, and then continue the firing order by plugging the wires in the appropriate order. This only works if you can identify at least one spark plug wire. I hope that helps, Chris

Generally OEM intake manifolds will have the firing order cast into them and if you clean it off where you can see parts you will find it.
Also as previously stated, you will find number one and that will tell you at least where it is. Depending on the engine being looked at number 2 will be either across from number one or next to it. If not known, it usually is un-inmportant but given a firing order and a distributor cap with wires on it even if some are missing it can be figured out. And just for general knowledge it is not uncommon when working on a V type engine people want to know where number one is. If you look at a V type engine from the top you will see one bank is positioned slight forward of the other which is because on the crank shaft each throw carries two connecting rods, one for each bank and the banks are position because of the location of the connecting rods on the crank shaft . The bank further most forward has number one in front. |

Not trying to be an A$$ but if you have to come here and ask this question and lack the know how to do a simple search to find the answer in many places on the internet or don't have a TSM you should be bringing your car to a service mechanic.

Dan, we all had to start somewhere. Better to ask and be THOUGHT a fool, than to NOT ask, screw things up beyond repair, and confirm the diagnosis...that's one of MY "rules to live by." Ever hear of the acronym FUBAR ?
Remember, Dan...carburetors and distributors are mostly historical artifacts these days. When I was a kid, I was fortunate enough that I grew up with a repair shop in the family [former Hudson delaers, in fact...who became AMC dealers, until 1960]. When other kids were reading comic books, I was reading the old MOTOR repair manuals and learning about firing orders and directions of distributor rotation. I learned "1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2" before I learned my Social Security number. Kids today learn Xbox and PlayStation and Lord knows whatever else the video game world has to offer. MY "play station" was the garage, and I was regrinding valves on the old Sioux valve refacer by the time I was 10...by the time I was 12, I was torquing rod bolts on Farmall Cub engines and learning to use a valve spring compressor and a ratchet-band type ring compressor...and learning why ALL the ball peen hammers in the shop had wood handles ["The better to drive pistons down into their cylinder bores, my dear..."]. Lighten up, man. We all had to learn sometime, somewhere. Better the OP should come here and get some good advice, than to send him/her to a Chevy forum and be told to "junk it!" just because it's not wearing a bowtie.

My point was something like a firing order is a 10 second search on the internet. It took longer to type the question than it would have to do a query that even give pictures. This is what came up for AMC V8 firing order:

The original poster doesn't say what engine this is for, there's a lot of AMC engines out there.
Everybody seemed to assume it was a late generation V8, when if you check some of the previous post it's actually a 327, that's not going to change the firing order, but the counterclockwise rotation of the 327 distributor sure will affect things if they wired it like it was the clockwise distributor rotation of the 290-401 V8s. |

Dan, maybe I'm mellowing some as I'm getting older...but the way I figure it, it's kinda counterproductive if you jump tooth-and-nail on someone who's apparently an AMC rookie...and then wonder why so many of those folks get in a hurry to "unload that AMC piece of s**t and buy a Chevy." Because sometimes, the impression you leave on someone who's trying to learn about their car can be transferred to a dislike for the car, or for AMC's in general. So you win the argument...and lose a potential up-and coming AMC'er.
Haven't figured yet how that helps the hobby in the long run. And I'm not saying this in the spirit of "calling you out" for a "public showdown at high noon." If WE don't make the AMC rookies feel welcome...but the bowtie guys do...where do you reckon they'll go when they get their NEXT old car? Kinda like telling a rookie to "buy a TSM" instead of helping them out this time, and then steering them the next time towards places where TSM's can be purchased. |

I truly believe that suggesting someone use the internet that we all have immediate access to rather than posting here and waiting for a response is good advice. Newby or seasoned vet, the fastest way to get info is to go look for it on the vast data available immediately on the internet. There are pictures, copied tech manuals and a myriad of other things available right away. Just make good common sense to me.
