Current setup - 73 Javelin 360 bored .030 over 280H cam dual quad intake, two 600 cfm Edelbrock carbs 727 auto with TCI 2500 converter 3.15 gears Hooker coated headers straight pipes from collectors back to mufflers Flowmaster super 40's (?) short pipes exit mufflers and dump right at the rear axles Is smelly in car and exhaust dumped under rear seat is loud and raspy at certain RPM Goals - have tail pipes added raise mufflers a bit - they hit bird droppings on the road as it is Mellow the sound a bit NOT lose any power. One shop said "can re-use your mufflers if you wish but would replace the straight pipes between collectors and mufflers" Have done multiple searches and read several forum threads here related to X and H pipes. It appears H is cheaper and easier, X is more expensive. I have seen two totally different thoughts on the sound from each - one said H would have more highs and X be more mellow, another thread appeared to say the opposite. With the list of specifics about the car, and goals, what say ye?

At the very least put full tailpipes on it. Otherwise pretty much anything else is personal preference

Not really - there is science to the X and H pipes, and the functionality (and seeking info on the sound changes)

I did straight pipe half length on my 73. Used turbo mufflers, looked about stock for the muffler body. Sounded good not raspy. As for noise at the seat not much more than full length.
The noisiest was the 65 vetted roadster, with stock side exhaust. My 65 Riviera had glass packs, as well as the 34 roadster we had. Both were mellow and kept noise down until you gassed. You probably want full length, just for the fumes and added noise reduction. As for X and H pipe. H will sound more straight piped and have better flow, unless your X pipe is customised. I've seen a lot of X pipe sections that seem more restrictive than what you expect. |

I have heard the 40s are the louder of their mufflers - that's what came on the car and they aren't that old, but if I can quiet it a bit and not lose anything as far as strength, I may consider that.

Bill, if the exhaust noise is bothering you then the radio must not be loud enough......
It has been my experience that an X pipe will have a mellow tone and still provide the exhaust scavenging properties that would be nice to have. With that said, it is tough to find a good shop that can properly configure an X pipe so you don't wind up loosing ground clearance. The caveat being pipe bends, muffler construction, pipe length, and pipe wall thickness all play in to the final sound. In another words, your mileage may vary. Personally I would only go with an H pipe if money or lack of a good shop was an issue. But that is just me. Otherwise nothing beats open headers for all out performance....... Just to tease you a little here is one of the polished stainless systems we built. Edited by pit crew - Apr/13/2018 at 9:46pm |
