Im eventually going to throw some bags on the car when its pretty much complete, as for right now id like to get the ride height from cutting the coils.

general rule of thumb as ive heard is about 2 coils; start at bottom at the open end, go up one coil leave it intact, cut the next coil true to the first coil.

like this
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/attachments/w126-s-se-sec-sel-sd/294677d1267872529t-project-arizona-rise-ph-nix-wide-wbrearspringvsoem.jpg

then flip the spring over, go in about a quarter coil from the bottom/area you just cut, heat it up with a torch while pushing down, until the bottom 1/4 coil compresses flat.

anyone else have any input?

What year AMC is this?  70 and later, and you don't want to mess with the top coils. They are wound to fit up into the pocket up in the tower area.
HOWEVER, I'm going to guess, because you don't give us any help in that you do not mention car, year, etc. - that from that picture it's some sort of 1969 or older AMC.
We have no idea, however, what year or model because that information isn't shared.

2 coils is a whole lot of height. You will not be able to get camber even close without some other modifications. But my guess is you don't really care at all about alignment or steering angles........

Note that you might end up with slight ride height differences, so be prepared to "experiment" a little.... certain amount of trial and error. Any time you heat a coil, you may make changes you'd not counted on as far as characteristics.

Why not save the hassle and bag it now? (rather than ruin good springs some other AMCer may want)

I've cut a lot of springs over the years,  one truth I learned early was don't go near them with a torch.

The torches heat will ruin the temper in the area you heat,  and it'll break later in the same area.

Use a cut-off blade on a angle grinder, cut-off tool,  something that will cut quick and not heat up the end too much.
2 coils sounds like too much to me also.

That's pretty much where I'd expect a break to occur.

OTOH, bulldozing is interesting, with a lot of science behind it, and research from big companies.
Pete suggested it for my SX/4 springs that made the front end of the car sit beyond the shock's ability to reach.
I got my car lowered an inch easily. Now it sits exactly where an Eagle should and the shocks reach fine.
No heat.
No cutting.

I've lowered several 70/ AMC cars by cutting a coil. I don't think I'd ever cut more than 1 coil though - 1 does quite a bit. I use a cutting tool to do it as suggested.

On my '70 AMX, I cut off 1-1/2 coils off the bottom, which dropped it a little more than I really wanted to-- almost 4". Luckily no rubbing.

Just Bag it.  It's not overly complicated or expensive if you put a little thought and sweat into it.

One the older cars (50s and 60s) the springs has to be flat on both ends to sit in the removable seats properly. Cutting is risky! Why don't you get some spring clamps/jacks? The local parts store should have them. Two metal pieces with two bolts, sets of two. They can be used to jack a car up by spreading the coils apart, lowering by clamping two coils together. Use two 180 degrees apart. You could clamp more than one coil, but you're talking about a good bit of drop. These will make the car ride harder, but no more than cutting the coils would. Best way to lower is to order new springs from www.coilsprings.com, but if you're doing bags later you don't want to spend the money on springs.

And just how much sweat depends on how much thought is put into it....  Wink

Cut one turn off the bottom of the front coils on my old '73 Gremlin. Front dropped about 2 1/2". Still sits in the saddle fine.
