I've got a cowl hood for a 71-74 Javelin, and i am planning on making it functional. I don't want to spend the money on an original cowl induction air intake assembly and everything. Is there a better way to go about this?

Would need to make some kind of duct to go from cowl opening to air cleaner seal
but this is one I made from aluminum for a car with a regular scoop.
Basicaly an air pan with a foam seal, Moroso sells rectangular ones
but they leave little room for an air cleaner. As far as I know this only works with a Holley Dual Line Center Hung Float Bowl type Carburetor and the Filter does stick up a little through a hole in the Hood but fits within a Hurst S/S AMX Scoop.

Your best option is to maybe make a sheet metal cover to mount on the framework of the hood and close off the area around the top of the air cleaner as best you can that runs to the back of the cowl opening. Then take your air cleaner lid off and get an K & N air filter and a K & N filter lid that is the same size as the air filter itself. The air will draw in at the back of the cowl.

Torker with 1 inch Moroso (1) hole spacer. Napa #FIL-6175 Air Filter is 4-3/8 Tall, 8 inch O.D., 5 inch I.D.
Filter I.D. fits snugly onto the Holley air cleaner flange, sanded the plastisol just a little bit.
14 inch O.D. x 5 inch I.D. Airpan base plate is a piece of totally flat .100 thick aluminum.
(2) 7/8 dia. holes in the flat base plate provide clearance for Holley Dual-Line Center Inlet float bowl needle & seat screws.
Caplugs installed from underneath seal the (2) 7/8 dia. holes and maintain clearance.
Using formula in K&N catalog it's big enough for 367 C.I. / 6.0 Liter & 6000+ rpm, about 90 square inches surface area.
K&N #E-2536 Air Filter Element is the replacement for the Napa FIL-6175 paper air filter element.

If it is a non-functional hood to begin with, you will need to open the back side by drilling some large holes to let air in. The functional hoods had a screen instead of the solid plate.

Phat69,
can you go into a little more detail about how you built that air cleaner base? Thanks!

A rough Sketch. The (2) .05 Alum. Filter "Nest Rings" are attached to the .10 Alum Base Plate
with Rivets and Screws and (4) small alum. "U Channels" positioned 90 degrees apart,
riveted to the rings and attached to the base plate with #8 Screws, not shown in sketch.
One of the nest ring rivets is visible in the bottom picture.
Foam is a 1 inch thick strip with ends bonded together with weather strip adhesive to form a ring.
One of the (2) Blue Caplugs used to seal the Needle & Seat Clearance holes visible in this pic.
And at the back, the riveted "Lap Plate" used to join the ends of the Inner Nest Ring
below the Foam Ring glue joint, and above the blue Caplug.

PHAT69AMX: picking up that old thread, as I like to copy your sketch on a 71 Jav/AMX.
Two more questions please: 1. which kind/material of foam did you use, as it should be air-tight and still soft/flexible enough? 2. what is the height from cleaner-base to top of foam? Thx, Alex. |

Sold the car April 2014 unfortunately but still have some info.
It was just some gray open cell foam I got at an industrial foam place, light to medium density I'd say. I "foolishly overlooked any safety / flammable" concerns of the foam. It was 1" thick and just went with the idea of air taking the path of least resistance since there was a hole in the hood, yes, a different foam may work better... I'll guess about 3" Tall on the Foam Ring made of a 1" thick Strip... The Filter pictured is 4.35", about 4-3/8", tall so the foam is about 3" tall. Different combos may need different height Foam. Guy just needs a 1" thick sheet, then can make different height Rings. Takes about a 44" long x 3" tall x 1" think foam piece to make a 14" O.D. Ring. Used 3M yellow Snot weatherstrip adhesive to join the ends into a ring. Yeah, it's real basic in construction, nothing fancy, but simple and worked. Challenge is anything much bigger than 14" O.D. starts crashing into other stuff... Then the 14" O.D. 1" thick Foam Seal ring starts crowding, limiting, Air Filter O.D. ... Best picture on-hand of the Base with maybe more details visible... An Airpan that flairs back and attaches to the Cowl / Firewall is the sheite, but more complicated to make...
