Converting 74 Humpster to Air?

My buddy has a 72 parts Humpster with air and I was wondering if there is much difference to the 74?  He thinks the firewall where the fan goes is different and mine would need to be modified.

The 74 doesn't use a heater control valve, I assume the difference is in the air box so if I had the 72 box I would probably need to switch to a heater valve as well?
 
Just wondering if this would be a rip your hair out conversion or a bolt in swap?

Jeff I would put money on the fire walls being the same, why Make 2, 1 for A/C and 1 with out?
I cant say for sure but thinking if you pull everyting from the A/C car you should be able to install it in a non-A/C car.
For the 70 Javelin I know the box & blower motors are different.

Hey Dave, I'm guessing the box is the big difference as it must have been re-designed when they ditched the heater valve off the intake...
Could be that they made a change in the firewall for the 73-74 models?

The 71-72 Javelins had the heater valve in a recess in the firewall just above the blower motor. The 73-74 Javelins should have the heater valve on the intake manifold (yes, it SHOULD have a heater valve). 
You can use the AC system parts interchangeably between 71-74 Javelins and AMXs, but the condenser in 1974 models was changed slightly for some reason and had a unique receiver/drier that is no longer in production and is very hard to find as opposed to the readily available receiver/drier for the 71-73 models.

Compared some engine bay pics on 71-72 to the 73-74 qnd they are different, the 71-72 heater core is vertical and the 73-74 is angled.  I don't think 73-74 came with any type of heater valve, I'm assuming the heater box was different to isolate the heater core...gotta dig up my TSM, but it looks like I'll need a heater box with air from a 73-74.  I'll use a modern condenser/dryer, etc as I believe they are more compact.  I think this is doable but probably a winter project.

74 condensor has flat bars and 73 down has round bars that the freon runs through. I bought an NOS on ebay along time ago along with a dryer that is also NOS to put on my 70 as I couldn't find NOS 70 stuff. It is just the fittings that make the dryer different. 69 had a change in the fittings too requiring a short line between the two. Factory condensors are rock hard and repopped ones are soft and get banged up easy so I opted for an off year of my car. I might consider selling if I can get 70 stuff.

The 73's do have a heater control valve and is mounted by the intake. You should be able to install the ac unit if you have a donar car to draw parts from. Just make sure you check all you vaccum switches and make sure it comes with the ac harness and relay to operate your clutch.

Something must have changed in 74 as it doesn't even show a heater valve in my TSM so I assume it's in the heater box...guess I need to hunt down a 74 heater box with air and the rest can be after market.

FWIW I looked into putting A/C into my Humpster and I felt it would be easier to put a Vintage Air Gen IV system in and using the factory A/C dash pad with the louvers in it. This way you would have an up to date and efficient unit versus some old setup with hard to get parts.

Maybe. But in my book, it's WAAAY cheaper to find correct original parts, refurbish as necessary and install. 
At least on AMCs you don't have to cut huge holes in the firewall like on GM and Fords. One hole for the hoses which is already there--just remove the blockoff plate.
