I have an 82 concord wagon d/l. 258, 6cyl. My muffler has had a hole in it for a long time but suddenly the other day the car will not idle. It stalls when I'm not giving it gas. I have to coast in neutral when I'm not on the throttle and rev it to keep it running.

When it stalls out, I start it right back up and it runs until I let off the gas. Then it bogs down and stalls out again. Could this be related to the shot muffler or could this be more of a fuel or vacuum issue?

Should not be related to the muffler at all. Sounds like a carburetor issue with the idle circuit.
Long time AMC fan. Ambassador 343, AMX 390, Hornet 360, Spirit 304 and Javelin 390. All but javelin bought new.

Is the computerized engine control system still installed and is it still functioning?

I believe the CEC is still installed. Everything on the car is original minus some wear and tear parts. As far as still functioning, I'm not sure.

I did just read about 'trouble codes' in the Chilton I have for the car. It's a new thing to me but doesn't seem difficult to figure out. Maybe a good place to start if the header pipes and carb seems ok.

Looks like my Saturday off just got planned for me.

Thanks for all the info, gents.

The computer is too primitive to create codes. In fact, the computer is too primitive to know if anything goes wrong.

You need to find out if the CEC is still operating because then you will know whether you need to look for problems in the CEC system or not. The engine will still run even if the CEC is not operating. If you can see the mixture needles in the carburetor move as the engine throttle is opened and closed, then that is a good indicator that the CEC is operating. Whether it is operating correctly is another question.

Same thing happened in my Gremlin. Siting in a drive through, suddenly it wouldn't idle. I had a vacume leak at the head/manifold. Try spraying something like carb cleaner or ether around the manifold gasket. if it revs, or smooths out you have your problem, or ruled one out.

AMC sixes are really bad about loosening their manifold bolts so that could be a problem. You'll usually get an exhaust leak first. I retorque my bolts every oil change because I HATE exhaust leaks.

Hey folks...so I popped the hood and started looking and digging for leaks of all kinds and broken vacuum hoses.

The first thing I noticed was the hose from the vacuum advance unit was not exactly seated correctly. I open the air cleaner and looked down the carb. Everything looked ok.

I started up the car and it idles and drives as it did before the stalling.

From everything that I have read about the hassles of the fuel and vacuum systems in the AMCs, it seems I got real lucky this time.

Thanks for all the replies. And good luck with all your personally AMC endevors
