What do you guys suggest for a 1970 390 with a stock T-10 and around 375-400 hp at the flywheel? Not looking for a race piece or anything fancy, just a good street clutch.

Thanks!

Chris--this is like asking which most men find more attractive:  blondes or brunettes.
And, this topic has been extensively discussed on the forum, so I'm surprised you
haven't done your research, based on the question you asked.

Briefly, there are two types of clutches:  borg and beck style and diaphragm. B&B
probably came with your '70 AMX when it was new.  I prefer this style, as I like the firm feel of
the clutch pedal as I depress it, just like back in the day.

Most others like the diaphragm style, as not as much leg strength is needed to engage the clutch.
I've heard that it's smoother and easier to engage the clutch.

There are many brands of each available.  I use a McLeod.  You won't find an AMC application
on their website, but they do carry the B&B style.  Based on my experience, I would recommend
using organic clutch disc material, rather than carbon fiber or ceramic materials, materials that
racers with a lot more hp use.

Hope that helps,

Steve

I've got a 401 making about 435 HP in my Machine right now and I'm using a Ram 88499HDX clutch in it. It operates smooth with no chatter and clamps good.

The alignment tool and throwout bearing didn't fit though as I'm using the earlier T-10 front bearing retainer.

McLeod also offers the Borg&Beck Long PP which is a hybrid of the Borg&Beck hat with Long-style levers to get the advantages of the Long-style PP in a package that bolts to a flywheel drilled for a Borg&Beck hat.

Thanks guys! I did do a couple of searches for various combinations of "Clutch recommendations" or similar and did not get anything. If you have any old threads to suggest, I would be happy to read them.

I have done lots of clutches in my other world of air cooled VW's but it was over 20 years ago that I last did an AMC clutch. Lord only knows what I used then. Now I live in a small place and having some knowledge can be very helpful when dealing with my neighbours 18 year old kids at the parts counter.

There is a NAPA clutch kit available but I don't trust it. I have no idea of the clutch disc material or much of anything else. It is 10 spline, 1-1/8" and a 10-3/8" diameter disc. No clear listing of numbers of spring and rollers or clamping pressure. The TSM gives 10" diameter for the 304 and 10-1/2" for the 360/390, so I suspect "one size fits all".

Thanks!

Chris--I tried a B&B style Napa clutch and do not recommend it.
It was "loosy goosy," at best--foot pressure required was a joke--
way too easy.

Steve,

You are just confirming what I suspected on the NAPA item. Looking at the specs it looks like it splits the difference between  the 304 and 360/390 units and probably is figuring that 80+% are going into a 304 jeep. I have a bit different situation than that so some additional looking is needed.

Is the Ram clutch a B+B or diaghram stye?

BTW, I tend towards brunettes, personally.

Thanks!

The Ram clutch I mentioned above is a Borg & Beck 3-finger.

Just curious:  Where is the RAM clutch made?   The McLeod?

Don't know where the Ram clutch is made, but I believe
the McLeod clutch is made in CA.
