I have a blue sport steering wheel in somewhat rough shape intended for my hornet, and I was able to track down the primer, adhesion promoter, and the SEM color coat all for the rim, but the stainless is a bit dirty and I was wondering what would be the proper way to clean it. Scotchbrite pad/steel wool parallel to the brush marks?

White vinegar wipe down, and baking soda with water, or salt and lemon juice. Wipe down with light oil dry cloth.

Thanks! It came out pretty good, I don't have a before picture with the horn hardware off, but the hub was pretty rusty. I tried to get off most of the loose rust off, will go back later to get the rest.

Whatever you do, don't use regular steel wool on Stainless steel. It will transfer molecules of iron onto the SS surface and then rust.

To remove rust from the hub use a rust remover like PHIX or it's equivalent and a SS wire brush or wet sand paper.

Or tape off the arms of the wheel with duct tape (the thick stuff) and media blast it.

For some of the stuff that couldn't come off the stainless with just vinegar, I used a fine grade 3M synthetic steel wool pad, which seemed like glorified scotchbrite

Bartenders Helper as used to clean SS sinks.
It's a mild acid. It's safe.

Bartenders Helper.. it also has an abrasive and should not be used on glass/plastic.
