does anyone know what engines the chrome valve cover came on? in 2017 I bought a 1965 engine, it had one. SCORE! alas... it was so weirdly warped it leaked like crazy, and I can't figure out how it got so warped. it's a twist, not just curved from being overtightened. I'm about to give up on it.

I just saw a pic in a 2009 thread with one. so I assume some factory engine musta come with. but I have no idea.

alas I can find a 1965 J. C. Whitney catalog, probably, but not a time machine, probably.

so, aftermarket or factory?

I bought mine from Kozicki? I've never seen one from the factory.

lol, I went back and looked at the post I'd seen, and it was yours!

mine was on a '65 engine some clowns out in San Bernardino yanked from a wagon. it was a low mileage motor, 0-over, crosshatch in the cylinders! but all the pushrods had fallen out (bad gas stuck valves, etc). dirty and un-cared for, but had this nice valve cover, but it's oddly twisted. I save it in irrational hope of straightening it.

Michael Kozicki! haven't heard his name in some time.

I'm probably S.O.L. on finding another. I shall troll the 'bay.

I'm in the market for an OHV short block. If you still have that same one that had the valve cover, we should talk!

I've got a very clean '58 block. only diff from later is the lack of 'timed' oil off the front cam bearing. it was a rebuilt/reman short block I bought from eBay more than 10 years ago. crank, rods, pistons are in my current engine (I think), the block is .040 over, stored indoors, and quite clean. painted blue.

if you want it lemme know. I also have a set of Silv-O-Lite .060 over pistons, new in the box. early eBay again. probably new in the 70's.

I want to keep the 65 together; it was a lo-mi motor I intend to put together again.

One other difference -- pre 63 blocks don't have the bosses for the side motor mounts.

I have a chrome valve cover too, and believe it to be factory.
When I bought it at a Kenosha swap meet years ago, the thought was that they may have come on '65 440H or the '64 440 hardtop (maybe with the 2 barrel option?) (I bought it from a an AMC dealer mechanic who was around when those cars were new.)
I've never been able to pin that down, and wonder if the AMC parts book would shed any light on that?

Not to steal your thread Tom, but speaking of valve covers (or as the always correct Hemmings Classic Car editors would say, rocker covers) I learned recently by actually reading the TSMs that some 196 OHV covers don't have the vent on the back.  Their PCV system has a calibrated opening in the oil filler cap/dipstick and no vent.  They have the early PCV system which vents from the side panel on the block directly into the intake tube of the air cleaner.  This happened around 1964 or so and supposedly only on the single barrel carb.  I think I got that right.  Joe

oh no problem, thanks joe.

yes! the smog stuff changed suddenly in '65 (maybe 64). the chrome cover has no vents, the oil filler cap is "closed" (but not gasket-sealed); i assume this relative restriction causes the bottom end to be (better) cross-ventilated by the side cover PCV.

61 or 63 on the right, 65 on the left. they're exactly the same size, the camera has distorted size.

i'm running a 65-like PCV system, though i still have the vented rocker cover (you're right of course; why did we ever call 'em valve covers?!) (oh well).

I've never seen a factory chrome valve cover. I know they had a few chromed for some of the photo/press cars and engines, but I don't think it was a factory dealer option or used on any of the production cars. I stress "don't think" -- I don't know for sure. Some enterprising dealer(s) may have had some chromed...
