That drywall joint compound dust is a real menace. Goes right through most filters unless you put in one of those special ones. I like this solution so well I think I'll build a simple one-bucket setup for my wood shop for the really fine dust.

Anyway, more photos, this time from camera and not phone. Shows more detail....
First couple show the hose coupling I have at this point to switch between cabinets.
Third pic is the hose I setup for the vacuum connection. I simply unplug it from the vac, plug in the vacuum hose for other use.
The others show the insides of the buckets, the 90 degree elbow, etc.
Both buckets are built exactly the same - the pipe extends down to within about 2" of the bottom of the bucket, and I put roughly 1" water in the bottom. Too much water it restricts the vacuum and you can collapse the bucket. These buckets work well at least so far - the lids seal well enough with vacuum applied it draws them down really tight.
You can see the dust and glass beads in the one photo. I used a hole saw to cut the holes, and got creative with 1 1/2" DWV fittings (cheaper than schedule 40 and you don't really need schedule 40 in this anyway). I did have to make plastic washers to add thickness to the bucket lids to get the fitting to screw together tight against the lids. A bit of silicon caulk helped, too.
