Tom Benvie originally donated the car, and now has it. There's no point in hashing things around about the car on here any more. It was an idea that looked great "on paper" but just didn't work out. Tom does plan to eventually finish the car and sell it, with the proceeds going to the Boston Children's Hospital. The clubs did a lot of work, but the project stalled on the body work. It took a while to get much of that done, and a lot was left to do when Tom got it.
It takes a lot of time and money to restore a car from little more than a basket case. That's one reason passing it around and "spreading the wealth" sounded like a good idea when the project was started. The fact is that few people want to spend a lot of time and effort on something that isn't theirs -- and few HAVE the time even if they wanted to. This is no longer a community project, not in the original sense anyway. People should still help Tom in whatever way they can to finish the project -- in that sense it IS still an AMC community project. If you want to know anything I suggest you attempt to contact Tom directly and see what he needs to finish the car -- other than finding the time to actually work on it. That's hard enough! |

To go along with what Chuck suggested, I suggest this. Rather than auction the car, or selling it outright, raffle it off. You could realize a far greater gain doing that in my opinion. It would help if the car were complete in some fashion for a raffle. I can't afford a 70 AMX, but I could afford some tickets for a chance to win one. I'm sure there are lots of people that would buy a chance.
Reading what Tom was doing to the car, & wanted to do to it, is admirable. However, I think it would be better to just make it a decent driver, rather than a last nut & bolt correct restoration, & get it done. It is Tom's car to do with what he wants, when you come down to it. I've made my donation, & said my piece.
Tom has mentioned difficulty coming up with parts donations. Its a catch 22. People don't want to donate any more $$$ or parts until they see progress, & we most likely won't see progress without $$$ & parts donations. Edited by scott - Nov/02/2011 at 3:50pm |

I agree to just make it a decent driver and forget a numbers matching, concours type car. A raffle would probably be the best idea with so many tickets to be sold so Tom's charity gets a nice donation. Maybe some of the people who "lost or misplaced" many of the parts for this car along the way could "try and find them" and get them back to Tom!!!! Too many people involved in this to just forget it again!
Was looking back over this post-another person had said they would paint it for free (few years ago) and maybe they would still be willing (should have been done then when offered-just another blunder on this project). He was well known in the AMC community and did very nice work.

Not much point in painting if there is a good bit of body work that needs to be done first -- that's one reason it wasn't painted at the time. I don't remember the location of the painter either.
The only problem with a raffle would be if you don't sell enough tickets. Once you determine to raffle something like this you have to set a date for the raffle. Can't be too far away. Then you have to set a price and hope you sell enough tickets to bring a reasonable price for the car. Can't say "didn't sell enough tickets, not going to raffle it now". At least at an auction you can set a reserve price to protect the investment in the car. |

I believe the person was offering to paint it and do the body work, but thats all in the past now. I still think a raffle is the way to go. Maybe raffle it as is (what's it worth right now unpainted and still needing bodywork-$10,000 tops? So sell 100 tickets at $100 each. I'm in for one. Don't think that would be too hard to sell and your odds of winning are pretty good.

What timing for me to chime in. I am home from work today and the next few days so I have some time. The reason I am home and the project is stalled is because I was discharged from the hospital yesterday after suffering my third stroke-my second was in April. I was just recovering from that one when I had another. Fortunately, I have not become completely disabled. I have lost some peripheral vision from my last one, a lot of memory-though not all bad as I don't remember anything about the Flyers beating the Bruins so badly a few years ago-and some significant strength and endurance-in short, I get tired real easy. Tough, as I am only 58 and not ready to retire, but also fortunately my job is not all that physically taxing. I have begun to sell off many of my cars and collectibles, and have actually started gathering some AMC stuff to go. But back to the car.
The car arrived back here two years ago, Labor Day weekend. We brought it to a few shows on a trailer for a couple of weeks just to expose it to the local car crowd. It was then totally disassembled and the rebuild process began. For awhile I was able to post things such as rebuilding door hinges, or some body panel alignments, etc but soon the car was just block sanding, and sanding and sanding. The rearend was stripped down and restored. The entire front suspension was stripped down and sent to a shop who donated his time to restore it-mainly the finish of it as the individual items were new. We got tires donated, then wheels donated (by Chuck) after he restored them. Some missing items such as hood trim was donated. For some reason the trunk floor was sprayed with bedliner-about an inch thick. It took forever to remove, and I mean 40+ hours. Undercoating was removed from the wheelwells. A better door and decklid were procured. A side exhaust was donated as was an air cleaner assembly. Some items arrived such as a restored ashtray, correct coil and oil cap, fasteners, sill plates, insulation, clips, a reproduction wiring harness, emblems, decals, door data tag stamped with correct numbers and correct rivets, dash overlay, arm rest overlays, steering wheel restored, and more. Whenever I went to the shows I solicited parts for free or for a better price. Most of what was restored or repaired such as the engine rebuild are still fine and do not have to be done again. Last Spring my daughter's boyfriend convinced his school to take the car on as a project. It is scheduled to go into the shop the beginning of the second quarter, a few short weeks away. Because of his commitment to get it done I did not have any more "work parties" to work on the car because his classmates wanted to finish the body and paint. As a former shop teacher myself I respected those wishes (plus had the stroke) so really have done nothing to the car for the last six months. But just because I didn't do anything doesn't mean nobody else shouldn't. I still do not have any interior parts such as carpets that ACC promised but did not deliver, or items from Legendary that were never really promised or denied. Hurst said they would rebuild the shifter, then said no. And I posted a long list of things needed for the car that most have not been located. Plus cash-I have spent a few thousand dollars the last two years on supplies, or buying items at cost or heavily discounted-but not free. The concept has taken a long time to be sure, but almost everyone involved did it out of dedication and honest efforts-very few were dishonest, and maybe some good intentions just went bad. The car will hopefully be a running, driving car come June, assembled to the best I can with what I have. But if I don't have it, I will not be able to spend a lot of time looking for the items. Besides my job and therapy I also coach basketball and softball, plus see my own kids games. (Though the two youngest are both Seniors so this will be the last year for that). The bigger question is, after June, then what? Who gets it, if it is not finished, who will do that? I was hoping Dan would get it out his way closer to the auctions, but is he around anymore? One more point-when this was started we hoped to get about $10K for a restored car, top money at the time. Now maybe 3-4 times that is not out of the possibility. Inflation hasn't risen that much, so we are ahead already. (Just trying to be positive)

Tom suggested someone take on individual tasks that are needed over a year ago. Just work on getting donations for that particular area, or even one item in that area. I cut and pasted some from earlier messages below. Note that this is a detailed list of many SMALL things. Many of those items aren't absolutely necessary -- like date coded spark plug wires -- but they make the restoration more complete. It would be nice to have a "must have" list and a "desired" list. Then Tom can work on the "must haves" and decide what to do about "desired" later. I don't think I'd pass on the car or dicker much on price if it had incorrect fasteners (maybe new instead of original or repo?) and non-date coded items like belts/hoses/wires.
Tom, could you look over the list and see if there are any items no longer needed? That would be a start. 1. the original center caps, trim rings, and all 20 lugnuts. 2. the interior. Sara from ACC originally promised carpets, but seems to have disappeared. We need headliner, door panels, rear panels, seat covers, dash pad. Those were from the last few pages in this thread. Detailed list from the "Parts Needed" thread: Under the hood: Correct 1970 log style exhaust manifold drilled for smog tubes. Smog tubes-both sides and nozzles and washers Need heat riser. Ram air parts-need everything except the “Y” duct and hood chrome parts (need over air cleaner with foam and solenoid, hood inserts) Would like a radiator with the date code J9, K9, L9, A0, B0, C0. Damaged or not, as long as the top tank is good. 7 bladed fan Correct 70 air cleaner housing with element-have snorkel and lid. Tom, Sorry to hear about your recent illness and hope you have a full and speedy recovery. But your memory must be OK as you remembered my offer to run it through the BJ Auction :-) !!! As per your inquiry regarding the sponsoring the car at the auctions, I am very much still around and into AMCs more than ever at the new shop with around a dozen cars either awaiting their turn to be restored or just getting finished up. We also have a couple of local forum/club member friend's cars waiting for for minor body and paint work and also just agreed to do a full rust repair, body and paint job for another friend/forum membe's Ambo. Plus we will eventually help Matt Wilson get his amazing factory Ambo 343 4 spd wagon finished up somewhere down the road as well. So absolutely, feel free to have the car out here at any time and in whatever condition it is in when your son in law's shop class finishes their work. I will be happy to put it at the front of the queue and get it finished up and ready for the auction. And as also previously mentioned, Craig Jackson is an AMC guy and a friend of mulitiple friends of mine so there should be no problem getting him to sponsor the auction like he does every year for worthy charitable causes. If the car is still out there at your house when I finally retire and start working the cars at the shop full time, perhaps I can come and get it if a finished restoration project needs to be delivered to someone on the east coast on an outbound trip. Keith Coggins and I did that run this past September with stops to pick up engines, parts and ferry parts and cars for other forum members on the way to pick up the SC/Rambler in VT and had a total blast all along the way. Perhaps we can do it again for the Charity AMX car next year and break in the new truck I hope to get next fall!!! Looking forward to hearing from you.

I remember donating some of the parts on the above list when I delivered it to Tom a few years ago. If there is an updated list, I am sure that I could come up with more parts that I will gladly donate.
