Hi everyone.

I just had my carter YF rebuilt. YF6431S It now spills fuel out when I shut off the motor. Rebuilder says its the charcoal canister, Bypassed the canister to just an open vent and this did not help. The shop keep saying the carb is fine. I do not want to open the car because of it will void the warranty.

Any Suggestions?

I am not familiar with that carburetor but it sounds like the float level is set too high or the pintle is not seating properly to control the fuel level.

I assume your car is a 232 I6 from 1973-1979? Yeah, I have been daily driving one of those for the last five years and 40,000 miles.

The float is sticking or adjusted wrong. There is no way a YF should leak like that or for the charcoal canister to cause it. The shop needs to suck up their pride and admit they made a mistake. Print out this forum thread and show it to them to convince them that they are wrong.

Fools. This is why EFI sells, because mechanics these days are incapable of properly setting the float on what is one of the simplest carbruetors ever made. The YF has existed since the U.S. invaded Korea, and was installed on the Jeeps that invaded Korea.

It very well could've had a sunk float. Brass floats can get pinholes and leak. They work fine for a while until the float fills with fuel and sinks. Then the carb floods.

The original float should have been Nitrophil (plastic). I've never seen one of them fill with fuel but I suppose it can happen.

Most YF's use a spring-loaded needle seat. The proper adjustment is to flip the air horn upside-down and let gravity pull the float down against the needle spring, partly but not fully compressing it. That is when the float level measurement is taken. Mechanics sometimes make the mistake of applying pressure to the float to compress the needle spring fully and that gives an improper float adjustment. Still shouldn't make it flood, but it'll make it run rich or lean.

YF's are good carbs. I've been daily driving one through thick and thin for the last 40,000 miles. The only things I can think of to look out for on them is the float adjustment as I said, the metering rod adjustment, and to not over tighten the float bowl screws. Pretty standard stuff.

When did the US invade Korea ?

North Korea invaded South Korea in June 1950.   The UN  sent troops  ( mostly US troops ) to defend South Korea,  at their request, that's hardly a invasion on our part.

The Carter website says they started putting YF's on Jeeps in 1952, during the Korean War.
