I have a stock 401. Stock forged pistons. Herman Lewis reworked (91C) Heads.
What is the biggest lift I could go on this set up?
Looking for a starting point.

Thanks,
Rick

With a reworked head there is no way to know without measuring. It depends on what hardware he used, and there can be a tremendous variation, and what valve seal machining has been done. You will have to measure. The only thing to further say is *likely* if the heads were reworked by a performance guy they would be set up for a performance cam typical of the application. But if you are changing cams you likely have to change the springs anyhow, and you need to measure and adjust all this for spring installed height anyhow. The catalog springs may not suit a reworked valvetrain - it has to be measured.

Stock pistons are NOT forged.  That said, I have run 500 lift cams without problems in stock engines.  One thing to note, the timing of the cam affects the piston to valve clearance.  The piston chases the exhaust valve closed and the intake valve chases the piston down and these are the points where the clearance is the tightest.  You can't just go by lift since max lift the valves are no where close to the piston.
