I was under the impression from reading these posts that all that was needed was the hole enlarged.

That portion of the adapter that is 2.688 in diameter and sticks out .200 is what centers the torqueflite flex plate. It will bolt on without it but the bolts are not designed to center the flexplate.

DO NOT rely on the bolts to align the flexplate!! The bolt holes may have more than 0.002"of play, and much more than that can cause an imbalance that can destroy the front pump, flexplate, and/or torque converter. Will also put stress on the rear main -- but I don't think it will run long enough before breaking something else to damage the rear main.

There are two different adapters -- the one shown, which requires some machine work on the crank, and a bolt-on one that has a 1/4" spacer that fits between engine and bell housing. Both work equally well, and cost ends up about the same. If the crank is out of the engine have it machined... unless there is a possibility you might want to bolt a BW up to it later.

Where can I get the adapter. I've checked most of the AMC suppliers' web sites and can't find it.

Be advised, some people have had difficulties dealing with this firm.  I'll leave it at that.

The adapter is $95. I don't know what the machining will cost but I'm sure it would be close to the same. I can buy the correct reconditioned crank with a full set of matching bearings for $241 at Autozone. I haven't checked anywhere else yet.

My local machinist did mine for $35.00

BJ's or CJ's 4x4 in Colorado has them for $35.00 as well. Just have not checked in 10 years. I stumbled upon them online, and he said he is aware of them because they do a lot of Jeeps.
