That's amazing! Great to see this come out of whatever barn or shed it's been stored in for decades.

They're probably more functional but I prefer the old school rims and tires and hood scoop. Still looks awesome though.

Yep, sure does look good, not arguing about wheel rim choice (does show a return to using shorter front tires to lower center of gravity without regard to 'pimpin' it out' with 20s' fashion trend)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Another example of vintage road race car fitted with typical-for-the-era wheel flares. Sorry to say it but historians fail to mention this aspect when telling Grem/Hornet history -that AMC made them to have wheel flares similar to how road racers were modifying their cars when fitted with wide tires back then. This would be a case for 'missing information' in AMC history for the simple lack of astute observation to connect the dots, plausibly caused by AMC marketing/advertising agency who never mentioned it, but fell into the trap of tit-for-tat retaliation to what all the write ups in the big magazines were saying about Grem/Hornet styling instead. (hinting at potential for new AMC history books with updated information?) eg: that AMC made Gremlin to fend off Volkswagen Bug's popularity (hogwash) but Gremlin was next AMX design formula gone full production, made low cost for anyone to buy, having '68 Gremlin GT styling looking very much like '68 Reliant Scimitar's 'shooting brake' styling instead (which links '77/8 Gremlin rear window styling to Volvo P1800) = 'true knowledge' that wipes the Bug off Gremlin's windshield. Hornet name, harkening back to Hudson, also indicated AMC's return to road course racing after '57-'62 AMA ban on factory supported racing ended > wearing the new flares like chevrons < earned from the former glory days. On a side note Pontiac showed the vintage fender flare mods on their Firebird Trans AM car in '70, but indicating aerodynamic 'wheel opening spats' were as useful as top-of-the-wheel-opening flares used on Grem/Hornet... then Hornet AMX matched that detail, then '78 Concord AMX and '79 Spirit AMX revived the 'we want to road race wearing wheel flares on our cars' message all over again. AMC forged ahead and made all '71/4 Javelins having full ballooned wheel openings instead, not wearing any 'add on/make-it-look-like-a-race-car-anyway' falsies for visual stimulation. A 'real' AMC historian could re-write this better, wrenching the words better to improve the maligned reputation of our favorite cars. Do I 'overthink it' or do we 'under-thunk it' by failing to make mention of the various historical attributes when viewing and discussing our truly historical AMC race cars? I would even assemble an essay named "AMC Underdog Complex" to explain the psychology over-ruling any successful attempt to recapitulate AMC's real leadership in US automotive history in any other positive, healthy, mental frame of mind. (in psychology, 'rooting for the underdog' and 'underdog complex' are two opposite frames of mind; one positive and healthy, the other negative and afflicted by acquired appetite for sitting under the pity pot!) The thing is, these guys are still trying to WIN? (obviously not fallen into mental illness and become complacent and satisfied?, to sit down on the pitty pot & sulk over poopy losses in days gone by) -Back in black with new tires shows their TEAM AMC intends to WIN? Up with the underdog! Bravo! Encore! Edited by amcenthusiast - Jun/22/2017 at 8:34am |
