In any transmission situation, to change a gear ratio, you must change driver and driven.
In this case, the driver is on the input shaft.
Can mean changing cluster or other gears - can get really tough to find parts as you need to find both "gears".
The input shaft is tough as that can be company specific - needs to match clutch splines, shaft diameter, pilot or nose size, etc. Internal gears are less often car maker specific.

Thanks for the info, even though it's not what I wanted to hear. I kinda figured it wouldn't be simple. I guess I'll be on the lookout for a complete tranny. Meanwhile, I think I'll have mine freshened up.
I always tell my AMC friends that part of the fun is the challenge of finding parts. Funny, but it doesn't seem like as much fun when it's me looking for the parts!!!

Guys:
Santa Arrived!
My refurbished 2.64 ratio T-10 is here at home with me.
Looks perfect and the shifters all work on the bench.
Sent my Hurst Comp-Plus shifter to Mike Semeraro for a rebuild.
Mike will be fitting me out with new shift levers, cleaning up the linkages and doing a shifter rebuild as well. Also he will be fitting out with a new shifter stalk (round Hurst).
When the refubished shifter comes back (probably March) then I will do the trannie install.

Ho Ho Ho, Merry Christmas 12Gauge.
Can't wait to see the video of your super-nice car doing a big nasty burnout this spring.

Yes Mike is a real nice guy an a true credit to the AMC community. I am blessed as he is usually at many of the AMC shows and other large shows here in CT which have vendor areas. He is working on his own AMC resto project and that is sucking up alot of his time.

Do the case ID numbers compute to what ratio I have? I bought a set of 315's off Kirkwood for long distance cruises. The 390 ratio puts me at 4k @ 65-70 mph.
I hope I don't have to pull the trans to find out since I just put a new clutch in it in July 07.

Ron:
There is a very easy way to find out what internal gears you have (assuming the trannie is out of the car)....
On the input shaft, with the 10 splines....
you will notice some faintish grooves that run "around" the splines...
2:23 grears have 5 such grooves
2.43 gears have 4 such grooves
2.64 gears have 3 grooves
If your case is aluminum (Super T-10)
Then
2.43 gears have one groove
2.64 gears have one groove
Thus in that instance of the Super T-10 or aluminum cased T-10 you have to turn the input shaft (with the trannie in first gear) and count how many times the input turns to turn the output around once. Use a marker and paint a input groove and the input guide and tape the output shaft and mark it. Edited by 12Gauge - Dec/20/2007 at 7:14am |

The trans is still in the car and its a cast iron case.
Guess I'll wait till the next clutch change to check the gear ratios

Yah well that would be the best method. You cannot see those scribe marks in the nose stock of the trannie when it is inside the bellhousing.
Happy Holidays!
