I have 1970 232 in a hornet with a BW automatic. Will a AMC 904 bolt directly to this engine or can it?

It is not a direct bolt on. There is a few threads on modding, one uses a custom adapter and the other modifies a tc snout to fit the existing pilot.

AMC changed the six cylinder bell housing to engine bolt pattern staring in 1972. So 60s up to 71 trannys fit, 72 and later don't. You would need a custom adapter for the 72+ trans (AMC started using TF trannys in 72, that's one reason for the bell bolt pattern change). No one makes one for the six. The old six bell is a bit smaller in diameter than the 72+ bell.

Easiest way to get the more modern trans is to change the entire engine. 72+ 258s are pretty easy to find, and will directly interchange with your 232. There are some accessory mounting differences, but as long as you get the accessory mounts with the newer engine it's no big deal. Easy decision if your 232 needs rebuilding anyway, but if you have a good running 232 it's a tough choice to pull it. The BW trans is a good one and can be rebuilt, but it's getting hard to find someone who knows much about them.

I'm assuming you're having issues with the BW? You might want to post what problems you're having.
