What size bolts hold the spindle to the front suspension on 1967 rebel?

IIRC they are 3/8" bolts on all the cars. You need grade 8 bolts for the spindle.

My 68 AMX disc brake spindles are on the work bench. The four bolts per spindle measure 7/16" dia x 3-3/4" long grade 8.
Questions are powerful tools...what's in your toolbox?

all AMC and rambler and nash spindle bolts (spindle, brake, knuckle steering arm) are 7/6-20 (7/16-NF) grade 8 bolts. lengths vary with application. only 7/16 and NF and grade 8. it's a critical part, i wouldn't mess.

i'm increasingly paranoid about certain antique parts, and these are one of them. it's the one single place i've bought AN (aircraft) fasteners on my current car. these four bolts (each side) literally hold the entire car together and a failure would be catastrophic (though with four there's redundancy).

also even expensive bolts are pretty cheap.

One thing that TomJ mentioned but didn't explain, is that fine thread hardware is stronger than coarse. Therefore don't substitute coarse thread hardware here.

Beware! Do not believe the sadly common rumor that grade 8 is more brittle and therefore has less shear strength than grade 5. This is not true at all!

Not to commandeer this thread, but I am currently doing a disc brake upgrade on my 75 Pacer using all parts from a 78 Concord. What is the torque specification to use in tightening the spindle to knuckle bolts? Is Loc-tite recommended?

Also, now I'm wondering whether I should buy some new bolts. I also had the thought that these 4 bolts are the only thing keeping my wheels from flying off and killing me. Where would one buy these bolts, in the specific lengths that I need (two 4 1/2" long, two 3 1/4" long, measured from the head of the bolt to the tip).

Fastenal sells these bolt/cap screws and there are other suppliers.
With Fastenal you can get certified bolts. Just like the failing ARP a few years ago there are many questionable fasteners on the market today so for critical ones like these I go reputable suppliers.

Grade 8 are more brittle (Rockwell hardness test) then Grade 5 but have higher tensile and shear strengths.

The problem people usually have with breaking Grade 8 bolts is when used on exhaust headers or manifolds. These were always Grade 5 or lower as thermal cycling Grade 8's here makes them harden and fracture.

Fastenal will take you for a nice ride on the price of their hardware. I would look to McMaster Carr for your bolt needs. http://www.mcmaster.com/standard-hex-head-screws I buy from them several times per week. Shipping will not be disclosed at the time of your order, but rest assured it will be very reasonable. I am hardly ever charge more than $5 on small orders.

Any Grade 8 bolts will work, of the right length of course. I've NEVER heard of anyone having a spindle break off. If a wheel flies off it's usually due to a bearing nut working off or a bearing coming apart, or even ball joints breaking. It's rar that both ball joints would break, but more likely than breaking the spindle bolts!

What would be the tightening torque for the spindle-to-knuckle bolts? I took a look through my factory service manual but I could not find it listed anywhere.
