Well, after MUCH deliberation and measuring and sweating trying to figure out how I could get my quicksilver shifter to mount in the console and come out of the stock slotted plate, I gave up. It was going to have to be down so low into the tranny tunnel that I wasn't sure it'd clear the tranny itself. Plus it was gonna be a pain fabricating a mounting bracket.
So... I mounted the B&M top cover onto the stock console. It made me cringe, but it'll work better since the B&M top is a some shape and brings the shifter up considerably. I fabbed a piece of 18 gauge to cover the space where the original shifter hump was bolted on before and the shifter clears it. It's mounted up underneath the console and attached through the console plastic and top metal faux wood grain plate. That's the only piece I'll need to replace if I go back to original in the future. Here are some pictures: Tracing out the cover. You can see where I cut it back trying to fit the shifter and retain the stock console look. Here's the sad results. I at least put on the stock knob and put a spring under the button to make it look like it functions. |

To clarify, this isn't an original restoration I'm doing, but the interior is just so cherry that I'm doing everything I can to avoid hacking anything up or changing the appearance. The transmission is a TH350 behind a Novak adapter. I did consider using the original shifter and making some sort of adjustable throw linkage pivot arm throwing a sort of bellcrank shifter lever on the tranny. I wanted a ratchet shifter though.

Just a note for those concerned it's crooked (first thing my wife said). The console is a trapezoid. The front and back edges are aligned and the shifter is parallel to the centerline of the car. That left side throws some people off.

After spending a little time sitting in the seat and making drag racing engine noises while slamming through the "gears", the shifter is starting to rub off on me. It's the perfect height and reach for me.

I was able to get the QuickSilver (mine is the earlier Mr Gasket version, but the same thing) to fit inside the stock console, but my car has a 998 trans which I expect has a narrower tailhousing in the area where the shifter comes through the floor.
To avoid cutting the floor of the car to clear the front of the shifter I cut a slot in the shifter that the floor slides into as you install it. |
