Putting my 401 back together soon and will be needing new timing cover so what do you guys think is my best option, will be hot street motor Milodon pan and want to make sure it's oiled properly

I'll say the same. The reason is that Bulltear made a jig to check the alignment of the distributor with the cam gear and check every one they sell. 5-6 years back there was a slight misalignment problem, most likely due to the conversion from English to metric measurements, as the new covers are made in China. This was fixed, but the recalled covers weren't destroyed -- they were warehoused. After a year or two someone "discovered" them and they went back out on the market. I think they are all gone now, but there may be some still lurking out there. So Bulltear checks them all. The incorrect ones can be corrected with a little machine work, and Bulltear has corrected a few over the years.

There are two tiers of covers. The Ebay, silver seal, proform, Omix ada are chinese repops. These repops are found under $200 and have a very bad track record and are made in China. They are missing the integrated steel sleeve in the alternator bracket hole and they also do not allow enough distributor and cam gear mesh. The ones we sell are made in Taiwan and are checked to make sure they fit. Out of thousands maybe 5 got loose from our shop. It is sad that in this day and age we have to import parts for our American engineered and mfg cars and trucks. |

Ah, so yours are made in Taiwan, not China proper. Big difference, though many won't know it! well, at least I knew you guys check them all!
It's just too costly to produce short run items in the US, mainly due to labor costs. If it can't be at least partially automated and has enough volume to warrant the engineering and expense of (partial) automation, it's not going to be made over here. Edited by farna - Aug/21/2012 at 11:37am |

So then, when rebuilding an engine, is re-using an original timing cover considered to be a no-no?
If not then how does one determine if their cover can be re-used or if it must be replaced?

The main issue with most timing covers (used originals) is wear in the oil pump cavity. A few scratches, even relatively deep ones, doesn't hurt much. There is a maximum clearance between the gears and pump cavity, but I don't recall what it is of the top of my head.
Also inspect the back where the cam gear may have worn into the cover. That's the second most troublesome spot. I suggest running a simple cam button to eliminate that in the future. |

What about taking this one step further, can the original oil pump housing and gears be machined to re-establish the correct clearances?
Would it then be possible to get a new set of oil pump gears and go from there?
Does anyone make oversize oil pump gears?
