Back in the day, any can that did not tare when driven a driver through it to remove. Now only a hand full are built so well.

Mobil 1 because I get a special on oil with filter.

Purolator has had issues of recent, no better than the orange can of death.

Wix, K&N and Mobil 1 are pretty much the same, as they have 1 micron filtration.

The best all around, would be to change your adapter fitting to the Jeep F1LA type filter from any of the good sources listed here.

I think you did it, Bruce! Consider the pot stirred, lol.

I use Wix, for no other reason than that's what smarter guys than me have said to use.

Wix (Napa Gold) makes good filters. The trouble is the particular one for AMC engines with the part number 1258 or 51258 has a quality control issue. Half the filters I've bought over the years had a non-operational anti-drainback valve which delayed the building of oil pressure when the engine is started and also reduced the oil capacity so that 4 quarts reaches the full mark because the one quart that is normally trapped in the filter, pump, etc. drains back into the pan.

Slight problem with buying an oil filter from USA, some sellers think Canada is somewhere by kazakstan and insist the cost for shipping is $40 when it is really about $7 or $8. So I'm lookin at $65 CDN for a filter by the time it gets here. I got a wix 51258 on there now but it is draining back into the pan.

So the AC Delco PF-24 seems like it would be available anywhere or at least at any gm dealer. I will call around in the morning. Is it as good as the baldwin?

I lost a car due to the orange cans once before, never again. It was a 1977 skylark 3.8L. Never knew what killed it. Had bought a case of orange cans. After 10 oil changes the engine died from lack of pressure. Never knew why. 20 years later I still had 2 death cans left. They also screw onto a 1997 Safari. Oil guage read almost zero. Almost killed that engine too. Changed it out for another brand and instant full oil pressure again.

I have a filter I got for free but am afraid to use it. It says parts + plus ph24 by parts plus Memphis, TN. Its navy blue and says made in USA. The box says: replaces purolator L20033, wix 51258, GM 6437462 and 6437994 and AC PF24. The old guy who gave it to me said it is a rebranded delco, he has a bunch left. Can anyone confirm this?

I've never had a Wix 51258 (or NAPA equivalent) on my car that had a working ADV. Take it off, lay it down in the pan and the oil just pours out the outside holes.

I recently compared oil filters for my VW TDI. Wix cost $3 more than Partsmaster. Inside the boxes were the same oil filter with identical markings made in Poland.

Currently have parts master brand 61036 from auto value on my Safari van. Anti drain back not required for gm 4.3 v6. Tried their one for the AMC 290 and it drained back into the pan. The parts master filters here say made in USA, AFFINIA, NC. Also tried the Napa brand, drained back into the pan.

So what I need after chasing these things for a decade is what filter besides a Baldwin has a for sure working anti drain back?
