I just pulled my AMX out of the corner of my shop with hopes of getting it running. For a little context, I've had this car for over 10 years and it was a rotted basket case when I got it. I need to get this thing running and either use it or sell it. I can't have it clogging up my shop any longer. I put the thread in the Drag race section because it is supposed to be a drag car. I'm gonna have some questions, which is the reason for the thread.

I dusted it off, got the shifter in, swapped the front coils and started the long, painful wiring process this week.

Andy

Beautiful car! Clap

Are you wiring it from scratch with just the bare minimum or swapping in a ready made reproduction harness?

Care to post the details/engine specs on the engine/Indy heads?

Thanks and yes. It is a fairly typical 431 Adkins stroker. Obviously he worked his magic on the heads, comp solid roller, 14.5 comp, ported torker, quick fuel 4150. I had a local guy build SS 1 7/8"-2" headers for it. 3.08 Jerico trans, soft lock, Dana 60 4.56 gear with Cal-tracs.

My first question is for stick shift racers, as I have never put anything like this together, what do you guys do while staging the car? I've heard that many install micro switches on the clutch maybe to activate the two step? I'd like some advise on that as I proceed with the wiring. Thanks, Andy

https://quartermax.com/clutch-switch/
On the Spirit I used this switch mounted to the inner fender so the bellcrank activated it. I used a piece of 1" or so aluminum to shim it out to the right depth to mate with the bellcrank arm at top where the clutch rod that comes from the pedal hooks to it.
I wired my 2 step though it(power from the line lock switch) so when you dump the clutch it goes to the high side limiter.
On my Gremlin I mounted it under the dash to the clutch lever cause I have a hydraulic clutch cylinder. And it was easier to get to under the dash in that car.

Thanks for the response Jim, I appreciate all the advice and parts you've helped me with. I ordered that switch and I think I get what needs to be accomplished. I got some wiring done this week, I should be able to have the vast majority of the wiring finshed by the end of the weekend. I'm using a painless performance street/strip harness, it seems pretty good so far. Andy

I tried to call Adkins to ask him what oil to run but he wasn't home. Anyone have any recommendations of there own or know what he uses? I seem to remember him saying Joe Gibbs, but it was a while ago. Andy

I switched to Lucas 20w-50 a couple years ago and so far I like the results.

Depending on your clearances, the 10w-40 might be the better choice.

Kevin, do you feel there is any benefit to running synthetic, or is it a waste of money? Thanks, Andy

Andy,
There probably is a little performance gain if you use a synthetic and get to the right viscosity.  But I'm a cheap Rambler guy so I have no personal experience running it in a race engine.  So far I have not had any issues that would make me want to switch to a synthetic.
