Hello gurus!

Re-cap, I'm working on a friends 65 american 440 with the OHV 195.5
The carb is puking gas everywhere. Not sure where he got it, a dreaded re-man Holley with list 2555-3
The throttle shaft is horrible, and it looks like the accelerator pump valve was put together with the wrong parts.
There is a check weght with a check ball on top of it. This would simply be backward, but the TSM shows a conical check valve.
Can a check ball be used in this body?
The TSM shows the use of guage J-21207 for setting the float. What is the dimension of that guage? Regardless, the float standoff looks reasonable.

Appreciate any help.

The main jet is all screwed up, so I can't get it out to see what size it is.

Hope everyone is having a marvelous weekend!

CJ

The exploded view of the 1909 in the 65 service manual shows the conical needle valve in a recess next to the accelerator pump.  That piece is called the pump discharge check valve.  There is a check ball (pump intake check ball) in the bottom of the accelerator pump cavity below the accelerator pump mechanism.  The float setting is not specified because they mention that same tool you listed. The tool, however, is actually part of a set, which I might have in my carb stuff.  Nevertheless you are pretty safe in setting the float essentially parallel with the air horn surface when the need, seat and float are in place and the air horn is inverted.

Thanks for the reply.

Got the check ball for the intake of the accelerator pump. No conical needle valve for the discharge check. That's where the brass weight and ball were, ball on top. Goofy.

So I'm short the discharge check. Any thoughts where to source a pump discharge check valve, or does it come with a kit?

Go to Mike's Carburetor Parts website at http://www.carburetor-parts.com/Holley-1909-Carburetor-Repair-Kit_p_656.html

That repair kit appears to offer both a new needle valve (which attaches to the float and that conical tip check valve.  It's a 30 dollar rebuild it.  Good Luck,

Joe
