The latest project in the shop is this 1970 Javelin from Tennessee. It's an original 390, 4-speed car and despite its stripes, simulated side pipe covers, Magnum 500's and half vinyl top, it's not an SST model. Plus, although it was built with the largest engine available, it also has non-power drum brakes! A very unusual car, and one of less than 8,500 base model Javelins produced in 1970.
This Javelin is quite solid and remarkably original right down to the underhood blackout and speckle finish on the wheels. The paint and carpet are also factory original (although some of both is missing). There is just general wear and weathering throughout the car.
Back in the day some typical modifications were made, but nothing which can't be undone.
Here are a few more pics:
In case you're wondering there will be no ram air hood or Donohue spoiler added, watch for updates on this really cool base model Javelin!

Are you sure this was originally a 4-speed car? The reason I ask, is because I noticed that there is a shifter-arm on the steering column (under the hood).

123 of the 390 base model Javelins were made in 1970 and 633 of the 360 base models were made.
Figure a 1/3 were 4 speeds. maybe 40 cars.
If the car you have is an A0M795X
You do indeed have a very rare car.
i would check behind the steering box to verify the vin.
Seems very weird that it has all the SST trim though.
2750 of the 390 SST 70 javelins were made.
Very nice origional shape. Edited by Teamamc - Mar/14/2012 at 10:42am |

That'll be a beautiful car once it's finished. What is the color?

Cool project! Can't wait to see this one move through the process. What are the plans? Full resto or just topside?

Just like the previous ones this car will only be taken down far enough to undo the ravages of time and use, including the underside. Since it has apparently never been wrecked, or even repainted, there should be a lot of originality left to document and preserve! As it comes apart we will decide exactly what is needed to return it to its former glory.
BTW, did anyone notice the typo on the door label, A-O-M instead of A-zero-M? Are all the '70 labels done like this? Just curious. Edited by Ohio AMX - Mar/14/2012 at 4:42pm |
