I am seriously thinking of doing this on my 74 Javelin.  Which year(s) aw4 works best and/or is the least complicated wiring setup?  I have read the sticky on the swap and am starting to accumulate pieces but do not want to over complicate things if say the 1988 tranny is preferred over the 2000 tranny.   I will be in Florida next month and thought that would be a good place to 2wd tranny and parts.

I have been using one in my Javelin for years now and it is great. I should go through and re-write this but just haven't found the time.

I know that the wiring is not bad to figure out on the 1988/89 version but, I don't know about anything later than that. Here is some more information that might help you.

I'm going to have too look into those threads, too.  There was complete 4.0L from a Comanche pickup, on CL, with it's 2wd AW4, and the guy only wanted $200 for the pair.  May have been $400, can't recall exactly.

It is best if you can find a donar JeeP vehicle. Here is a short list if what I used from the JeeP;
Floor shifter and cable.
Brake swich and bracket from the brake peddle arm.
Trans controller - from behind the glove box.
All of the wiring going to the throttle position sensor,controller and transmission.
Throttle position sensor.

If you're running a Holley 4BBL w/electric choke, there is a kit to fit a TPS to it.

The nice thing is it all bolts together without a adapters.  I even used the 4L high torque starter for the V8.  I also used the 4L flex plate and had it balance matched to the stock flex plate.

Does it matter if the AW4 is from a 2WD or 4WD Jeep?

Yes it will. The 4WD version has a transfer case adapter on the rear, a different tail shaft and housing, and no driveshaft provision. You'd end up disassembling a 4WD version to convert it to 2WD, so just start with a 2WD version.
