One would think. I do enjoy when there are exceptions to things like that though, an import beating an American muscle in a straight line, an American muscle beating an import around curves...just not when it's in a movie with a terrible story line. LOL

Well I fixed the leaking oil pan drain bolt, The oe bolt threads were worn, installed a self tapping drain bolt and all is dry after changing the oil and sitting 24 hours...not a trickle around the bolt..5 quarts of 20/50 and she's ready for a trip to the 1/4 mile.  Gonna get an alignment first install and overflow can and she'll be ready to make passes.  Also going to bump the total timing to 36 degrees and leave it there, has colder plugs and a very rich tune to the carb..no chance of detonation..never heard it ping..has 9.8-1 compression(mechanical).

Don't fool yourself - you can't always hear detonation. It may detonate and NOT give an audible ping.
Some folks have been surprised.............
Not saying it will, that's not the point. Just wanting folks looking in to not think that because you say you can't hear ping then it's not detonating.

5qt of 20-50! What is the oil psi at speed when hot and when cold? I would run 6 qt even if it is 20-50 but would also run 10-40
And yes that is what I rn in my drag car.

That's to prevent leaks - too thick to leak out.
Seriously, I dunno why - seems awfully thick to me when 10w40 is a plenty, even in our summers.

Fuzz....oil pressure is 30 PSI hot at 750 RPM in drive.   50 PSI at 70 MPH on the highway has really good oil pressure, pretty much the same with 10W40

Billd...using the 20W50 since it is an hour drive on the interstate to the dragstrip...and even with the old drain plug on there weeping(although it appeared less than it did with 10/40)  it didnt show any dramatic drop in the dipstick with Valvoline VR1 20/50 after 100 miles of driving highway and I drove hard on the highway 80-100 MPH,  city driving  and a good burnout. Could be that with 10/40 and the new drain plug the level wouldnt change anymore..but it could be 90 degrees when I take it too...so little bit of insurance and I doubt the thicker oil would hurt the 1/4 mile times by much at all.

Manual drum brakes should make the 1/4 all that much more "fun"   I used to hit 88 MPH in the turbo Ford...should be good for over 90 with the AMX.

Bill, this seems strange... I've got repop Firestone E70-14 Wide Ovals on my AMX, and turn exactly 3000 rpm at 60 with 3.91 gears?  I believe the wide ovals are 25.7" in diameter.  Is your converter slipping that much at speed?  (my calculator says my setup comes out to 5162.3 feet instead of 5280, but that is w/in 2%)

After all this High RPM for 1 hr @ 80-100 mph and not running the 6th qt I think you have been really lucky.

Clarification.....when I hit 100 it was only for about 1/2 mile..mostly cruise @ 60-65 and its turning 2500 RPM at 60... boost up to 70-80 occasionally just because it sounds cool.  I can turn off the electric fans on the highway and it stays @ 195 deg at those speeds.   Dont seem to hae any drainback issues but the heads arent stock either.Wink

When I first start the car oil pressure climbs to 60 PSI revving between 1500-2500 RPM
