I haven't read many first hand reviews of the comp 292 cam. I know, it's big. Just hoping to hear from someone who runs it

It's big for a hydraulic flat tappet cam (244@.050 on 110 LSA) and old tech but size of the engine is important. It's in the realm of the biggest I would run without going to solid. I run a 239/249@.050 hydraulic flat tappet, so I'm in the same ballpark. Any bigger and I would switch to solid.

It's ENORMOUS in a 290 or 304, really big in an a 343 or 360, kinda rowdy in a 390 or 401.

There are much better cams out there, The 292 Magnum comp cam has been on the market since the early '80's. I've run them in a couple of things years ago. Most memorable was a 302 Ford and that motor was SUPER ROWDY with it. I eventually downsized to a Ford Motorsports 303 grind for less lift but similar duration.

I personally prefer a split duration cam and Ultradyne by Bullet is my absolute favorite. I wouldn't run a 292 Magnum unless I already had it in hand and was on such a tight budget, I couldn't afford to spend $160 on a custom grind.

FYI, asking for a cam recommendation and or brand, is kind of like asking what kind of woman people recommend. EVERY ONE WILL SAY SOMETHING DIFFERENT, AND EVERYONE WILL HAVE A HORROR STORY.

EDIT: From your other topic, it looks like you're running a 401. It will lope pretty good with a 292, but would be streetable. You can get away without a high stall converter, but it will really benefit from a 2800-3000 stall converter. But I stick by my assertion that a split duration is better and there are more modern lobe profiles.

Thanks for the input. I'm just getting excited to run this thing! Been thinking about it for way too long now! Rowdy is the goal. Sort of wishing I had done more research on cams before everything went together and opted for something a little more modern, but I can't imagine it being a disappointment

Ran one in my 401 Gremlin back in the late '80's. Had alot of bottom end and pulled hard. Torker intake, Fuel Curve prepped 750(flowed 900 cfm)3500 stall convertor, 4:56 gears.

I would say that the light weight, gear, and converter didn't necessarily hurt your bottom end.

I agree 100 %. The car was a purpose built street race car, a rollerskate. Glass fenders, hood, lexan side glaas/rear window. Suspension was leaf spring with floaters. Still have the car and am in the middle of rebuilding it. Swapped in a Comp 565 solid, upped the compression, 4500 stall w/transbrake and changed the suspension to a 4 link. I do think that the 292 is a great cam with the right combo. It is old tech but does the job.

I personally think the cam is out dated...thats why i switched it out..were still not 100% sure it will be reused but for my sons engine i would like a hydraulic grind to start

I had one in a 360 that was in my Gremlin, Iron heads, 11:1 Compression, Torker and a 780 CFM Holley Vac sec
Best was 11.14 @ 118 Mph  ( 2888 lbs race weight w/driver )

It really dosen´t pull hard until 3000 rpm and at 4000 rpm its pulling HARD
