Just wondering...has anyone got a new gas tank for there Amx /Javelin within the last month?
I know they got a new shipment in recently.
Are they suppose to be painted ? Just received mine and seems it`s painted silver on one side(bottom)
Partially painted on top side around sending unit area. Pretty thick silver paint. Got one a few years ago and don`t recall it being painted at all.
Just wondering if anyone has gotten one recently and it being the same way. Thanks

This sounds relevant to my interests. The day I bought my 71 last year I had two blowouts and the trauma left a big crack in my fuel tank. It can probably be welded up but I'd rather have new sheet metal available. Are the new tanks any good? How does the fill neck go in?

New tanks are nice. My car is a 69 Javelin...71 tank might be a little different... not sure. You have to remove and reuse filler tube from old tank. It's soldered /brazed in. You can heat with a heat gun to break it loose, but be careful... it's a gas tank (fumes). I planned on painting it anyways, but didn't remember them being painted already

I think camjam did a Hornet wagon 22 gallon tank write up.

I also pulled my original 71 tank this summer, will end up cleaning it up for sale some time.

Will be doing the 22 gallon tank myself.

Nope, not me, though I did put a new gas tank in my '69 AMX when I restored it, about two years ago. Other than soldering in the filler neck it's a piece of cake... assuming you have a lift that is.  I had the use of one at the time.  Not sure how different the later tanks are.

A new tank sure makes the car look nice underneath.

I received one from Kennedy in the last month or so and it was painted silver as well.  Nice item, but for the price, I think it should include the filler neck Shocked.

I cut around an 8" square out of the old tank around the filler and took both pieces to a gas-tank repair shop.  The necks are soldered in and take quite a bit of heat.  I have an extra filler neck available if anyone needs one.

Pulling/installing the tank was pretty easy on my garage floor with just a floor jack.

It is a good time to change the oil in the rear axle as there is quite a bit more room to pull the rear cover with the gas tank out.

If memory serves, the bottom portion and lower sides of the tank (including the exposed mounting straps) originally got sprayed over with black undercoating (at least in '69). Just a thought, if you're thinking about keeping a stock appearance. Bruce

Yep, I just redid my tank, straps and fuel lines this fall. I reapplied the coating using body shultz and a sprayer.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the coating is protection from dings that later turn in to rust holes.

Had the tank for my '70 AMX redone by Moyer in PA. The tank was boiled and sealed. I believe the tanks had a galvanized coating and them some undercoating covering some of the tank and straps. I found some galvanize spray paint which comes real close to the factory finish.

Just a suggestion regardless of the tank finish is to put a strip of roofing paper (tar paper) between the tank and strap. You wont see it once installed, but it prevents rusting between the two.
