I throw the msd gears in the scrap pile. use your old dist. gear on the msd.
The only non amc gear I run is a Mallory bronze gear and they have worked great for me.

i know this a very late reply

the cam grind negates any thrust issues, unless you have a bad cam

the distributor gear strips because it is over loaded from the oil pump
make sure your oil pressure is between 45-60 psi
to reduce oil pressure take out the oil pressure regulator spring and use a grinder to cut off a couple of rings, reinstall then run the engine and check the pressure

I had the same problem, oil pressure was 75-80 psi, did not take long for gear failure, also the engine is designed for 20W oil, your oil is also cooling the inside of your engine, thinner means more can pass through thereby reducing internal heat
