I took my 69 AMX in for an alignment and was informed my front suspension is pretty well shot. Kanter offer a full suspension rebuild kit, including trunions for under $500 - problem is the shop is struggling to give me a labor estimate - anyone have any idea of the hours it takes to do rod ends, bushings, ball joints, and trunion rebuild?
The shop wants to just do the work and charge me however long it takes and I want to know the labor costs. They are a very good shop but I am looking to know what to expect when all done. Can it all be done in say 10 hours (just a guess)? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Dean

In a shop environment with appropriate tools shouldn't take long at all. Worst is the springs.

If they are willing to handle those springs and the do decent work, don't worry about it. Let them do it.
My $.02. I had a Rambler coil spring get away from me (flew out of a shop press) in an AIRCRAFT shop with thousands of dollars worth or airplanes within range of that flying spring. I lucked out that day. Joe

Dean, if they are doing everything on the front end I would be conservative and estimate it will take them 1 whole work day, maybe a day and a half considering challenges, so 8 to 12 hours. I go to a good shop and that was their timeframe. Challenges do pop up, such as the coil springs that were mentioned. Sometimes, depending on condition, center link can be bent, strut rods are shot, coil spring cups are rusted out, etc. Make sure you have new pads for the coil spring cups. They are usually shot unless replaced before. And make sure you have new strut rod bushings on hand. Hopefully the Kanter kit contains all rubber or poly for a full rebuild.
I am sure they will do a good job but in my experience front suspension work usually uncovers a surprise or two. Having said all that, they should give you an estimated price and scope with the caveat that they will call you in advance with a cost for any surprises that pop up. I am guessing their 10 hours will be close x their hourly labor rate but I would have it in the form of a written estimate. And I second Pacerman on the springs. I pulled two out of a junk yard 69 without the use of the proper tool (even though tension was already reduced somewhat) and one popped and hit me in the chest. It knocked me back a couple feet, bruised my chest badly. I was extremely fortunate that day. That alone is worth a good shop's time and equipment. Edited by LakesideRamblin - Jul/17/2017 at 9:19am |
