You can see from the pictures below that the driver's side (first picture) and passenger side (second picture) front part of the rear quarter panels is rotted out. Many years ago someone welded in some small steel patches and used some seam sealer, but it is a mess now. The lower portions are missing about 3/4 of an inch on each side. These bottoms are supposed to be the jacking points, but they are completely gone.
My concern is how this is supposed to go together. I have searched on the forum for someone who has worked on this part of the body, but my search has not proved fruitful. From the frame diagram in the TSM, the inner rocker panel extends all the way to the inner wheel arch and welds there and welds to the torque box. That is where most of my rot in the pictures lies. I already replaced the inner rocker to the torque box when I repair my floors. My plan is to use a steel plate underneath where the new inner rocker piece will weld to the one I already installed. This is a structural piece, so strength is important The outer rocker panel welds over the inner to the door. I will replace this from the front of the torque box to the door. Again I will weld to the existing outer rocker that is in good condition. This will give a nice clean edge to the door. Between the door and the wheel arch, another panel welds to the bottom of the inner rocker. This panel is stamped with the jacking point on the bottom and is available from APD. I won't need to use all of it. I don't think there are any other body parts of concern for this fix but ? |

If you look through the forum at other restorations and the TSM you will see the rocker up front is made up of three pieces spot welded together. The center one is 18 gauge (punched holes in it to lighten I presume) and the outer ones are 20 gauge I believe. I had to cut back until I could butt weld in a new center and then form new inner/outer pieces. Butt and spot welded into place. It will help cutting out the lower part of the inner wheel well to access and see what your going to be up against. There are no replacements for these that I could find and in salt country, no worthy downer. The "drain slots" were formed/tig welded in later.
I suggest buying a comby shear/break/roller and make a few small practice pieces first to get an idea of how much material to start with and were to start bending or rolling. When you are happy with your formed material and method - write it down and make the pieces. Took me a month to make and install. After this the rear inner wheel wells were a piece of cake. Also buy a decent dolly/hammer set - need this too. Again, Good Luck
