Your '67 would fall under an earlier regulation on vehicle lighting.

BigBad is correct on the '68's. '69 and up have parking lamps on with headlights. I have corrected my earlier post.

don't think the lights know if it is day or night, that would be something the operator of the switch has to determine

The lights don't know if it's dark, but the driver does. The assumption was if you put the headlights on, it's dark. That was in the days before the government made decisions for you. Now the headlights go on regardless of exterior lighting conditions. I'm so glad Big Brother is watching out for my best interests. Wacko

Your headlights go on in a modern vehicle if you have a fancy one! That's not a Big Brother issue, that's the automakers adding features to vehicles. If it were government's doing, they'd all be that way.Wink

In Canada 1990 and newer vehicles have daytime running lights. Proven less accidents due to being able to see other cars better in the sun, shadows, sunrise/sunset etc. The fancier cars have auto headlights which only activate with sensors. This turns on all the exterior lighting not just the headlights.

As someone mentioned, the rheostat gets corroded-the coil spring looking thing around the porcelan, it looses contact to keep the dimmer accurate, if you have fine sand paper, you can clean it and the little copper finger that rides it, and the dash lights will remain working as you hope. As for side marker lamps, they were mandated as a reflector in 68, they did not become working and actually turn on till 70 as a law in alot of the less expensive cars like the American. The running lights in the bumper do stay on in 69, but before that they shut off when the headlamps were on. Just a normal thing, they changed that law so when you had a headlight out, you still had some sort of a corner marker when you meet oncoming traffic. SH

This is almost correct on the side marker light history.
The government mandated side marker lights OR reflectors on vehicles built starting January 1, 1968. Most automakers put illuminated side lights on most of their '68 cars. Some (like AMC with the American) used reflectors, which were probably cheaper, and still met the requirement.
Starting with January 1, 1970 the requirement was for BOTH illuminated and reflective side lights. That's one reason that a '70 Javelin front side marker is very different from a '69 Javelin front side marker.

Anyone know of 'generic' auto parts store for replacement of '69 AMX headlight switch, or need to go to APD etc?

IIRC I got my 70 Javelin switch local. My project I am replacing all swithes & senders if they can be gottin.
So far only the heater blower switch is a no show anywhere so I hope it works.
