Off brand engine transplants were more acceptable 30-35 years ago when there was a plentitude of almost every model. I'm guilty of putting a sbc in my wife's 1961 Mercedes, a sbf in my 1964 XKE, a sbc in my 1959 A-H 3000. These engine transplants were done in the early 80's. Not one was easy to do properly with everything working as if the factory built it. Resale value plummeted on all of them. Magazine companies sold a lot of issues back then with DIY engine transplant articles. I saved the magazines with these articles and get a kick out of reading them every once in a while. Two years ago, I installed a sbf 302/AOD in a 36 Roadster. Was it easy? NO! Issues I've encountered are engine mounts, transmission mounts, electrical, exhaust, clearance issues, air cleaner clearance, wiper motor fitting, required hardware for manual transmissions, speedometer cable fitment, power steering, cooling, driveshaft length and yoke, pinion gear angle, etc.....just to give you an idea.
Questions are powerful tools...what's in your toolbox?

Can I have the 390 V8 then? I mean, if you don't want it and all...

Not sure where the 'Shouting Guy' is located, but instead of rebuilding his 360 and spending $$$ he could have spent far less on several late-model and well-running 360 V8 engines and saved himself the fabrication time. After having driven both the 350 SBC & the AMC 360 in my time, I'll take the 360, thanks.

People who don't want to fix what they have seem to give up all too easily and change out the whole motor - makes you wonder what they'll do when something goes wrong with that motor (and it will).

Maybe sell the AMX and buy a Chevy/Ford/Mopar?

There's a FrankenRambler section within this forum..use it if you must.

You should look at what a few were able to do with an LSx swap... IMO a 390 is pretty strong, and if you want stronger there are ways to add power without swapping an engine or engine drive train combo.

A newer tranny can be done to make better acceleration and economy if going with over drive.

Tranny swaps are less complicated in that if you need to cut and weld, it is usually the hump that needs more clearance, not the whole engine bay.

Yes you can drop an engine in an AMX, but to me I'd rather drop an engine in something that can be revived with a restomod, than to take a running collector car thats design is all to itself.

SO you can do an engine swap but can't figure out how to turn off the caps lock key? Wink

For $4k, I could make that 360 smoke that GM crate motor without breaking a sweat.
