It's been a while since I asked a stupid question so here goes.  I've been watching the AMX's on eBay and noticed something.  There seems to be two basic types of dashes, one where the dash is flat in the area around the tach and speedometer and another that has kind of a 'visor' over the dash area with the tach and speedo.  Initially I thought the flat style was '68 and the 'visor' (hooded?) style was '69 but there are both styles of dashes on both years of AMX's on cars that are going through eBay.  What is going on?

68's didn't have the visor nor did early 69.  Sometime around mid 69 model year (~dec 68- jan 69) the visor was introduced.  At about the same timeframe as the visor was introduced, 69s had chrome tunnels on the instrument cluster for a short time.  So, 69s had at least three types of overlays, maybe 4; I can't remember offhand if they had the chrome tunnels w/o the visor or not but they definitely had the visor with chrome and painted silver tunnels.

Early '69s also had black tunnels w/o the visor.

Okay, just so I have this correct, no '68's have the visor, the early '69's do not and the later '69's do.  So the '68 with the visor has the wrong dash in it?  Any idea when in the '69 production run the substitution was done?

Thanks for the help Thumbs%20Up

It doesn't mean the dash was swapped, just the cover. That piece is interchangeable between 68/69.

If the dash was swapped for a 69 dash it would have the VIN number in the dash - 68 had no spot for the VIN.

My 1968 actually came (to me) with both visors... the unhooded one as well as the 1969 hooded one.  In 1969 when the hooded gauge bezel came out, the original owner ordered one as he liked the looks of it and it made the gauges more readable (according to him).   At that time the ralley pack gauge cluster and the hooded bezel were added to the car as a dealer option to the 1968 (again the dealer was only able to get the hooded bezel in black according to the owner).

These two black colored bezels (in a tan interiored car) prompted the dealer to suggest that the dash be repainted as the ralley pack only came in black.  So at that time the hooded bezel, the ralley pack bezel and the passenger pad were dyed at the dealer to the same color which is close to the tan.  At least they are all the same color.

I still have the original tan unhooded bezel.  The Hooded one does not have chrome holes but a flatish silver hued colored holes.

See my post here - this is a 1969 Javelin (won in a Crystal Sugar contest in 69), but a genuine original chrome tunnel dash.

So we've got hooded, non-hooded, black, silver paint, or chrome recesses, depending on whether it's a '68, early '69, or later '69.

I've also seen a variation in the vinyl grain stamped onto the overlay. One is pretty well defined, the other is a smoother appearance (closer to the finish on the hood).

OK, back on this old topic, the chrome dash gauge tunnels as used in 69.
My brother's car is actually being stored at my parents house now! So I can go look at it any time I feel like driving a couple of hours..........
Unfortunately, there's no door sticker to tell the month of mfgr!
I DID get VIN, etc. from it, so here's the other info, perhaps someone can tell us how early or late the car is/was by the numbers:
Metal tag:
R033217
6979-7
963-E
beal blue or whatever was paint code
E083655

VIN ends with M267614

The interior is 100% original untouched (you can tell, trust me) and has the original dash with the chrome spedo tunnel, etc. (not pseudo-chrome via paint)
