Here's a simple test you can do:
- remove distributor and oil filter
- connect a 1/2" hose to the filter mount pump outlet and run into a clean pan
- use a priming tool with 2800rpm drill
- run it for 5 seconds and see if you pump the pan dry. Since flow is unrestricted and continuous rpm (2800rpm drill = 5600rpm engine), should be more than double the flow you would see in a 5 sec. idle-5500rpm run ... and has zero drain back.
- then keep running the drill until it stops flowing and see how much time it took

Then realize it can't pump the pan dry in a short run.

Reaches 5,500 pretty quick, definitely less than five seconds.

That sounds like an interesting test, simply run the pump without any resistance to flow and see how long it takes to empty the pan. 5,500 RPM would be 2,750 RPM so if the drill would spin that fast it would equal where I'm seeing the pressure drop. Might have to drive the car around to get it up to temp then quickly perform the test.

Sold!

Still, Easter Egg hunts are fun because you are surprised by what you find and where. I see no issues with what Reb wants to do.

I'd love to have that engine here at home, I'd run it as is!

I would pull it, correct the pick up height, install a windage tray (I love them) and external drain it.
With my access to machines it would take a few hours and the thing would be just fine.

I would not test hot - too much risk of hot oil splash. It will flow more cold than hot (less internal pump leakage).

If run is 3 - 4 seconds and you start at 800rpm idle and run to 5500rpm, could run the drill constant 4 sec. at the average rpm (1575rpm drill). Then keep running till it stops pumping and check how much is left in the pan. This will help gauge the minimum level in the sump.

When you have the pan off, tilt it at 45deg to simulate max acceleration and fill to get the same minimum level to see how much oil is needed in the sump.

Hope this helps,RD.

I just don't see how running a drill on a cold static engine is even in the same ballpark as his 1st gear run.
Just the pumping pressure from the lifters when running makes that test unusable info.
Not to mention the hundreds of other differences between a running and none running engine.
Am I missing something?
