It's 90% CNC now. the days of masters and hydraulic cam grinders
are now entirely in the second tier market. Not to say thay make a bad cam at "Joes Cams". Not at all. But I have talked to the guys at Howards frequently, it's all CNC there. That said it is easy to make the "master" grind a slightly larger or smaller with the old machines as well. I would drop a dime with the cam grinder before making a change. |

Yes, Howard's bought that Landis computerized grinder from another company a few years ago. No, the majority of today's grinders don't use computerized grinders, many still use Bercos grinders. It's expensive to get a company to create a dog for various brands of engines for their computerized grinders, at least it was for Lunati. SKeown

why all this guessing about the lifters?? Just measure the diameters of the bores and lifters and see if there was excessive clearance causing pressure loss. Very doubtful that the internal valve design of the lifters is causing this oil pressure mystery, unless they are defective.

348 AMX, watch the video.
And over oiling the vlave cover area is a common issue. I had the problem 35 years ago with Crane Hyd lifters.

Apparently they are having second thoughts about replacing the lifters, I would send them back requesting they make the necessary changes in metering the oil flow to the rockers. Something is going on being that reducing the pan's volume by 1 1/2 quart put it back to sucking air. When I returned a lifter for not oiling at all, Joe admitted they had supplied a bad lifter, faulty machining. SKeown

If nothing else the video is showing that you are getting WAY more oil than is needed to the top end.

For those wondering what effect roller wheel diameter has on the cam's duration, here's an example. Here's the duration changes for one of my .475"lift, SBC profiles, when changing from a .750" wheel to a .810" Wheel. Duration -- Wheel Size @Lift ----- .750"/.810" .020": 315.04/315.49 .050": 278.52/279.68 .100": 245.30/246.80 .150": 219.89/221.46 .200": 197.15/198.68 .250": 175.25/176.67 .300": 152.65/153.85 .350": 127.74/128.72 .400": 98.19/98.93 .450": 55.43/55.83 Mike Jones Jones Cam Designs Denver, NC |

For those wondering about the high energy and the pro magnum hyd lifters that Comp Cams sells, here is what their tech line indicated: Hi,
The actual measurement for the lifters would be, .9042, and the seat heights are 1.9015. There is about a 0.0004 max deviation between the few I measured. Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,

I got the same reply and asked further to make sure there was no confusion:
"Ok, I'm assuming that .9042" is nominal and the max deviation represents a plus/minus .0002" on either side of .9042" for a maximum deviation total of .0004? Thank you for replying."
Hi, That would be correct. |

I never disagreed that the change could be minimal.
2 degrees is not a big deal. Just that I would drop a dime first. A bind on the ramp or excessive accel-decell could do damage.
