That's the one and only Aussie Gremlin, so yes, back in the US now. Obviously a few private imports made it out here along with some brought in by US military personnel that were stationed here.
There is a Marlin in John Ivey's collection in Perth, don't know if it is the Aussie car though: And this is the 71 AMX, again can't confirm that it is the actual Aussie car, but that's what the owner thought it was, it's obviously had a colour change along the way if it is: Was sold a few years back and went East I think. 70Hornet, maybe you can scan that series of articles and post them up here for us. Will be something else to look out for on eBay now. Edited by WesternRed - Feb/17/2013 at 7:11pm |

I would say that is the 71 Javelin as it does mention 71 Javelin 'AMX'. Maybe their source was incorrect on original colour OR maybe it was sprayed that colour at AMI after whatever the big accident it had while with AMI. Also copies of most Restored Cars mags I think are readily available as back issues through that magazine which is published by Eddie Ford. The Marlin was stated as red/black and I am 90% sure I saw one on ebay a year or so ago saying it was assembled in Australia?

The 71 AMX was painted by the guy who had it in Perth, I don't know what colour it was before but quite likely the colour was changed. Could have been half a dozen different colours over 40 odd years.
That picture of the Marlin was taken in 2007, so wouldn't be the same car you saw on eBay. I have no idea what the origins of Johns car are, could well be a private import. |

I mate of mind that owns a 56 Rambler Wagon RHD has always remembered a Red and Black Marlin on display at Grenville Motors in Sydney back in 1965 or 1966. I couldn't remember if he said if it was RHD or LHD. I assume it was the AMI import car but saying that, AMI could well have shipped the car to various AMI showrooms across the country to get feed back. Who knows.

Interesting stuff I only have a computer and printer so unable to scan but will try to find someone who can but if you email restoredcars@iinet.net.au or ring 03 54762212 you should be able to order the back issues of Restored cars 177, 178 and 179 with the AMI/Rambler stories for around $10 each I think. Also they may know of other Restored cars issues that have dealt with Ramblers as the magazine stretches back to the early 70's. Has anyone got any pics of AMI in Melbourne and of any Aussie Ramblers being assembled (especially Hornets ). Huddy55 I would say that was the aussie red/black Marlin your friend saw all them years ago for sure.

I have done much searching for AMI factory pics. I have found some good stuff on the Picture Australia website, type in AMI or Australian Motors Industries and a few pics can be found but mostly the early toyotas etc. Some Ramblers but not much.

Does anyone know the address of the AMI factory? I would assume it was in Bertie Street. I spend a fair bit of time in Port Melbourne and it would be interesting to see what is there now.

Most of the advertising gives the address as Cook Street, Port Melbourne, but that may have been the corporate office rather than factory.

Here are a couple of photos of the Premier Motors Dealership, 999-1011 Hay Street in Perth from 1972:
The building is still there, or at least it was in 2009 as seen in google street view: Edited by WesternRed - Feb/18/2013 at 7:17am |
