A 10 x 2.5" brake drum would not be "original" on a 70 AMX. Some Ambassador and Matadors came with 2.5" wide rear shoes/drums, but that would be mostly Fleet and Wagons. You can not just swap in a wider drum, FYI, it requires backing plates to match the 2.5" wide shoe. The 1 3/4" wide drums are readily available from Rockauto.com in Centric Brand at very reasonable prices, they just don't have the three little 1/4" diameter holes to hole the drum in place when the wheel is removed...but that does not effect the function or ultimate fit. Hope this helps. |

Thanks for that.
I will be swapping the whole of the rear brake assembly. I still have to find out if 71 and up Ambassadors and Matadors had 2.5" rear drums as standard or if it was a towing option. If I can find them from a parting car I will snap them up, who knows I might get an AMX that slows down, maybe even stops! |

I thought I answered your question but maybe just caused more confusion. 2.5" drums were NOT standard on any US built 71 up AMC Passenger cars (see possible except below). They were a Fleet/Taxi/Heavy Duty Option on only the Big Body cars such as Ambassador and Rebel. I have seen some documentation that shows 2.5" was standard on Station Wagon's but I have never parted one down.

Hi
A while back you were able to help somebody out with info and parts. Part 5, do you call that the brake bar? I need a couple for the rear drum assemblies from a 73 Ambassador Wagon. I appear to have shrunk... Anyway, the drums are 10" x 2.5". Do you have a couple of these, or can you tell me where to find them? Cheers

I'd be curious about this too, from a racing point of view. Some bigger drums out back would draw alot less attention than a set of discs....

Hope this helps. [/QUOTE] I was on Rockauto.com and I looked for the drums using the part number listed here in this thread for the AMC 20 rear. They come up as not available. I called Rock for help and they were not helpful at all. I have had a few problems recently with buying parts over the net and want to be sure before I order anything from them. These numbers, I think, will fit for my car, a 1973 Javelin, P code with the AMC20. Drums...Pronto #BD80012 or Centric 12367024 Wheel cylinders...#W17508 and W17507 Has anyone used either of these drums or cylinders on a Javelin AMC20? Thanks for your help.
