Won't be much love for non-AMC swaps on this forum. You could easily do a mild to wild 360 inside your budget.

That would be a nice project. I don't know if it would be a bolt in because from what I know the six sat back in the firewall. Maybe you will get lucky and the eight will have a little more room from the mounting flange to the back cylinders?

Just dont under estimate the ability of the old amc 6 to dang near heal itself with some good maintenance and drive time. My grem had been uncared for with few oil changes and overly rich choke, bla bla etc.
With correct maintenance it got better and better/  Oil consumption almost went to 1 qrt every 4k miles. Then i put valve seals on as most were brittle and just cracked . After that easy 2.5 hr task, it wouldnt use any oil.  Lifter also had been ticking, and was virtually a non issue within 5k miles.
Of course, its a workhorse only, not efficient and powerful like modern stuff.

it probly isnt lifter if it stops in N.  Is it an automatic?  Perhaps a loose or broken flexplate is noise.  That may be why it got parked.  Still, the rest of it is ready for 250k miles if cared for.
so your not intending on replacing with a hybrid motor?

If you want to make a nice daily driver out of the car I can understand wanting a more modern EFI engine. The Jeep Powertech.... you mean the 4.7L? You'd have to check dimensions. It's pretty tall and wide up top, but should fit in a Pacer. That's the most interesting of the three you mentioned. The Lexus V8 would be my next choice, but you're going to be totally on your own as not too many mess with swapping those into anything else.

The 4.0L is the most practical choice because it will literally bolts in. You just need to do some wiring, which isn't too bad as long as you use the 91-95 (OBD1) system. OBD2 can be done, but you have to work around the security systems. Anything else will require custom engine mounts to be made. The AMC six to V8 mounts that Bulltear makes won't even work with the Pacer as it has unique mounts.
