There is no difference between a 904 and 998 pump housing
Hurst is absolutely correct.

If I ever wanted to go with a TF I'd go with the 727 and start with this case:

There are Mopar 727's everywhere that could be used for the internals.

Use the 998 you have its the v8 or heavy duty version of a 904, I had one behind a 360 amc worked great. Like others have said 998s have heavy duty internals.

Also the 401, 304 and 360 amc share everything on the outside of the motor minus the flywheel and balancer, so trans, valve covers, intakes, exaust, power steering brackets, alt brackets etc

Well now, I think it has finally sunk in to my hard drive. "USE THE 998 TRANS THAT WAS HITCHED TO THE DEAD 304" Thank you so much for helping me get this registered in my brain.
I have noticed a problem with the 304s torque converter and the 401s flexplate and crankshaft. Torque converter has 4 mounting pads, flexplate seems to be for 4 bolts. Also the nose of the converter will not enter the crankshaft.
I meant to say flexplate has provisions for 3 bolts. Previous owner says he sent wrong flexplate with 998 trans and torque converter.

Look inside the crank "snout" (for lack of a better term right now) if this 401 was ahead of a TH400 in a Jeep, there will be a metal ring in there for the TH400s smaller diameter convertor hub. You need to remove that ring.

If the crank shaft has the small metal ring in it then the flex plate with three holes is most likely one for the GM trans also. A correct flex plate will be needed. A 304 flex plate is balanced different you will need one for a 401 with the Chrysler transmission.

Order one for a 1974 car.   Jeeps used TH400s until 1979. when Jeep went to TFs, in 1980, the 401 was out of production.
