All '72 up AMC pattern trans.

Bolt up: 904, 998, 999, 42RE
Handle the power: TH400, 727 and AW4

AMC Borg Warner M12? auto (need a custom flexplate and crank adapter) from a '72 - '75 Postal Jeep

A518 and A618 with a Bulltear adapter.

I had one with an Allison 540AT in Canada in a Motorhome Chassis that I swapped the bell on it for a Dodge one. I'm sorry I didn't keep that bell now.

I read the link regarding the "Bulltear adapter," but I never saw a word about them actually building it.

I seem to remember that the Buick "Nailhead" (401-425) ST400 (TH400) was used in the AMC's. I know that tranny was used in everything from Aston Martins to Rolls Royces.

Yes, with the handy dandy Nailhead trans to any engine kit. That's what kept that trans in production so long was its unique short bell design. You do have to watch out to be sure you get the correct stuff as it was used with other engines in the Jeeps too. You also need to be sure you get ALL of it. It's more than just the cast ring.

You would only need the nailhead version (with crank/bell adapters and balance matched flexplate) for a '71 304, 360 or 401 or Gen II motors which would then run the Ford style starter. The AMC cased TH400 won't work without a different adapter for the '71/older motors.
I'm not sure the nailhead version's adapter would stand up long to a built 401.
