I am finally getting my engine for another CJ5 project, the 360/340 hp 9:1, from CME and I need to put my valve covers, oil pan and such on the new motor. My question to you all is, is there a one piece oil pan gasket out there that will fit this 1978 motor? I have been looking at Fel-Pro and Victor Reinz and with no luck. Thought maybe someone knows if there is such a thing. If not, I am guessing by reading post's that the Victor Reinz gaskets are a better choice for the two piece design. What do you guys think about the choice?
As for the valve cover gasket choice I prefer the rubber ones but, they too are like trying to find hens teeth. Lol Thanks for your suggestions and help!

Never had an issue with Felpro 2 piece. Actually the two piece is pretty good. Just make sure you follow the details listed in the TSM for proper seal. The front seal must have plenty of RTV bead for the bottom rubber seal on the timing cover, and it's flanges that bolt to the front of the pan.

No 1 piece oil pan gasket. I've never had a problem with the Fel-Pro gaskets. Leave the cork side pieces dry, maybe a couple of dabs of Permatex trim adhesive on the block side to hold them in place. A dab of Ultra Gray where the cork meets the rubber end pieces. Make sure the timing cover gasket is trimmed flush with the block. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. just until the cork starts to bulge. Make sure the oil pan rail is straight and the bolt holes aren't dimpled. If the bolt holes are dimpled, make sure to hammer them back flush. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN (did I say that already?).
All the Fel-Pro gasket kits I've seen come with rubber valve cover gaskets. Bob tufcj |

Edelbrock valve cover gaskets. Rubber with a steel shim in between. Love them and they work great on the race car and the price is right. http://https://www.summitracing.com/parts/edl-7532/overview/make/american-motors/model/american

When I built my 360, I used a Victor Tough Cork gasket on the oil pan.
It used a layer of perforated steel sandwiched between two layers of cork. Impossible to crush that gasket or make it squirt out.

No matter what gasket you use if you use a light film of sealer on both sides, just barely snug the pan down and let it sit overnight to dry. Then the next day you can tighten it some more without squeezing out the gasket.

Rock Auto has the rubber valve cover gaskets by Fel - Pro for $4.60 a set on a discontinuation list.
I just got a discount code today : 3718411333838101 No idea if it will work. But best luck I've had on the valve cover gasket is using Permatext the gasket to the valve cover. Leave the engine side with out any gasket cement of any type . The rubber gaskets always worked best for me. The cork gasket always leaked for me. Why I never used them. The valve covers are removable that way , with out replacement and do not leak. LRDaum |
